I would like to attach a fibergl*** mercury grille shell (after modifing)to the steel on my shoebox ford grille opening. I was planning to use epoxy resin. Any other recomendations? Anyone attached gl*** to steel before?

    That should work OK.
Body shops now have a glue for bonding metal to metal and metal to plastic.

Depending on how it's mounted, I would epoxy it in place, use some pop rivets - for stability - and then shape it over with kitty-hair (a chopped fibergl*** in resin type of bondo stuff that you can get at most paint/body suppliers) Then you'll be ready for some finish work with bondo or glazing putty.

  5. Contact me if you want a steel one for your car. I have one Meteor one left. Not real cheap, but it is a bolt in. You use a stock 49-50 ford hood with the indent for the bullet filled in. That is what ford of Canada did. I have pics. Pat.

Rough the steel up with 60 grit, clean with acetone, let it dry before starting. Wet the steel first w/catalyzed resin before trying to mate the two parts up. Wear gloves--getting sensitized to epoxy is not fun.

Shouldn't use the tiger hair with epoxy; poly's and epoxies don't like to be next to each other. I'd use methacrylate glue to put the pieces together. Bonding those two materials is always a challenge, and the results and durability of the results not always predictable. I'd take the guy up on the offer for the steel piece.

Fibergl*** and sheet metal expand and contract at different rates, you can’t change physics.
Like it was said, sooner or later it will crack.

Look into a product by the name of Vette Bond, your local bodyshop supply should be able to get it. I have had good results with it over the years....Goodluck, Littleman
