I would suggest that if you want a Ford in a Ford and a four popper, AND you want a p***enger side exhaust, you should look at the Duratec engines. They replaced the Zetec engines in the Focus a couple years ago and became the standard Ranger I4 in mid 2001. In the Ranger they are 2.3L and about 150hp/150 ft-lbs. 2.0 and some 2.3 in the Focus. They came(come) in the Focus (2.0 & 2.3), the Escape (2.3), the Ranger (2.3), the Fusion (2.3), Mercury Mariner (2.3) and several Mazda's. http://www.******focus.com/html/2_3_duratec.html
I think that you will be ok with either, though I understand the exhaust issue. The Quad 4 looks more like the Fronty out of the box, and Quads 4 rods (http://www.quad4rods.com/)has some great accessories to dress them up, though they arn't cheap. Jake who built the car below is here on the HAMB, and he is a cl*** A builder (He is oldneb5window here). He could give you some good insight I think. I think that he made the carb covers and I am not sure what else. The Zetec and Duratec motors are great options though. Also you should consider the Iron Duke, and Pinto engines. As I recall I have seen DOHC conversions for the Pinto from the UK. I think that the Banger guys should have an opinion here too. Many of them run B engines with goodies, and they seem really reliable. They might not do 140 (though they probably could) but there are many that will beat a V8. Also there is another thread floating around on 4 cyl engines, there are about a million opinions there. Good Luck, MRAK Better pics of this car here. http://homepage.mac.com/mrakdesign/PhotoAlbum5.html
The twin cam Cosworth head fits the 1600 pushrod motor that came in some early Pintos. Also known as the Kent motor,it was used in Cortinas and Fiestas.
Like mounting Hemi-Chrysler valve covers on a Chevrolet V8, Olds Rocket valve covers on a Chevrolet V8, Ford small block valve covers on a Chevrolet V8, 6-71 Blowers on top of 4bbl carbs, the disguising of a common engine as an exercise in what? If you like the Ecotec, Supertec, whatever engines and want to build a T speedster with one, do it! A well built and conceived car is always appreciated more for what it is rather than what it is trying to be. Another perspective.
The Duratec is intriguing- would a T5 trans bolt up, or would I need an adapter? Pasadena- Not trying to hide/disguise anything really. The possibility of me purchasing a Fronty head is about the same as me getting to the moon, so I wanted to find a more modern engine that had the closest look. Yeah, making "Frontenac" covers would be nice, but I would still know what the engine was AND would be happy to share. Basically, use an engine that would make the younger crowd see that there are more applications for their engine than a "drifter" and the older crowd appreciate the inginuity. Plus, it would give me a drivetrain that would be pretty dependable.
Yeah Ian, I thought that it was Cossie, just couldn't figure it out at 7 this morning Their site is http://www.cosworth.com/ I see pasadena's point, and to add to it, most people don't LOOK at their engines anymore so they wouldn't really have a clue as to what it is. But, I confess I have thought about the Quad 4 for similar reasons, and it looks good all by itself too. MRAK
If Ford uses the Duratec in RWD applications, then a bellhousing should be available. Dimensions for the Duratec.from the Cosworth site: L x W x H 584 x 465 x 637 mm Divide by 25.4 to convert mm into inches.
The Duratec bell pattern is Duratec specific. The manual trans from the Ranger is an integral part of the ******....ie no seperate bellhousing and ******. So no easy OEM swap of that type. As of this point in time www.quad4rods.com has T5 and C4 bellhousings for the Zetec and the Duratec.
So if you don't like the Duratec trans, your stuck. $500 for an adapter, plus throw out bearing, clutch, etc.
Mac, there are some great ideas here! I've been thinking about the 4 banger version for some time and this inspires.
The FWD Zetc motor is the same engine only 2300cc's used in the Ranger pickups with RWD. My sons 05 has a 5 speed automatic and will get 30 mpg. Many of the Zetec speed parts will work on the Ranger. Im not crazy about the shim valve adjusters but they only have to be checked every 50,000 miles. Ford started using them in the mid 90's so they should be a lot cheaper too. They are pretty much bulletproof. It is also the same engine used in the sprint cars in the Focus size
***uming you are going to freshen the engine the quad is a good choice. The head gasket has been resigned several times and doesnt have near the problems they did when introduced.Early models will use an ecm instead of the pcm and will more affordable.I have worked in a GM service dept.for 17 years and have seen the best and the worst of what they build. The Quads can look real cool when done right.I have no problem with the Blue Ovals,I just think the quad looks cool.
Not true. The Zetec engine has its intake on the left side and exhaust on the right side when looking from the "front". The Duratec has its intake on the right and exhaust on the left when looking from the "front". The Zetec was replaced by the Mazda based Duratec engine.
Thanks as always for the input- keep it coming! Pitman's right- there ARE some great ideas here- glad the post has people thinking... Not2low- any advise on which Quad to look for? Again, as I understand it, the 2.4l is a goodbit better than the 2.3's due to the upgrades, but is there a specific 2.4 to keep an eye on?
h folks ,I know I,m a ford guy but here is one we put in a 37 chev project for a customer at a shop I worked at ,quad 6 - is 2 quad 4s 1 cyl cut off each end , welded ,billet crank and cams ,adapted a rwd trans ,webers and crank trigger ign
Bigcheese, Thanks for resizing those pics- even though it "Ain't no 4 no more", the idea and execution are great. Okay, sgtlethargic, you have my apologies as your suggestion DID work... I just wasn't smart enough to realize that I actually needed to PASTE the pic on something ! Well, here's the body idea- nothing flashy, and I'm not sure about using the cycle fenders or not, but let me know what you think (gulp)...
