Update on my situation...i just pulled the motor and took it to my machine shop...figured im better off taking it to a flathead shop that knows what they are doing...im just having everything inside replaced with new...all i have to say is im goings to be out of $$$ by the end
Just called Napa they have a gasket kit for a 1950 Merc Flathead for $52. Does this sound right? Also are Napa Headgaskets good quality?
Just got some Copper gaskets for 28 a piece from Vanpelt Sales...MAc on the phone told me to spray the gasket with some metallic spraypaint let it get tacky and then throw them on. Torque in 2-3 steps and then warm engine retorque wait a few days and retorque again.... This sound right?
For the early heads, I like the FelPro blue perma-torque. You can get them at NAPA as repackaged in Victor (blue side hiding from you) - I think p/n is 1026K. For 8BA heads, the Victor composites are good. I know some folks have good luck with copper, but I've had a couple issues (probably not gasket fault), so steer toward composites...
Update on the flatty rebuild...i decided to go all out with the rebuild so im about $5000 in now...but its getting done but a flathead expert so thats where im at....i should have it back the middle of this month
The problem with 40,000 experts is that you cant tell who's blowing the most white smoke. I like the Pope thing best. That's testable!
Flatheads are notorious for cracks around the valve seats, often down into the ports or into the cylinder walls. I hope that your block checks out OK.
A mechanic i know showed me a trick to tell you whether your head gasket is blown , take the spark plugs out and crank it over if the gasket is blown water will shoot out the sparkplug whole and fly half way across the shop .
Well, if water shoots out of your spark plug hole, you may well have a blown head gasket. Then again, you may have a cracked block. Similarly, you can have a blown headgasket that won't leak water into a cylinder too, so no water would shoot out of the spark plug hole. While it's certainly something that's easy to check, it's far from infallible as a means of diagnosing what's wrong...
sorry for the hijack i just got my 55 truck with a 327 in it going and it blows white smoke on start up and when you rev it up. i'm bummed i work hard to get this thing going now it smokes what can i put in it to help till i rebulid it some onementioned cd-2 how about lucas stop smoke . billy
