This is my first year into my hot rod build. I live in Buffalo and now have 7 long months before my next swap meet or cruise night.

I guess I may actually try to get the car on the road by June.

Any other Northeast Hamblers go through similiar withdraw? Is there any counseling available?

  2. Get out in the shop and work on the car,,,,talking about it and watch TV don't get it on the road,,,of course,,,a little time here is OK. :D HRP

I agree. I am going to get off my fat ass and get this thing done.
A heated garage would be helpful.

we deal with the shitty winters here in the north middle slice to, always seems like nothings going on. Thats what garages and torpedo heaters are for.

HRP has it right. Get a heater and put in a bit of time every day, even if it's small jobs. Everything that you do moves you foreward to completion (and you'll have less to do when it gets warm again:D )

Move to Texas. Swap meets all winter and no heat needed in the shop!

I collect parts and do small jobs like carb rebuilds. My garage is too small for anything major so I make a plan and stockpile my parts.

    YEAH! Or Arizona!

Winter time is parts acquiring time! ebay, HAMB, etc.....
Spring and summer is building time. Thats how I'd do it, if I had no garage in the winter.

Bring small parts inside and work on the dining table. Carbs, wiring, gauges, lots to do if you look around.

Snowmobile and chase the old lady around the house, and work on the car alittle here and there.
You could always make the old lady into a Hot Rod!
Just strip her down and put a straight stick in her!

Oh how I remember the days in Buffalo. A torpedo heater in the shop or garage may help with the cold but not the depression. Meet up some of the guys here on the HAMB once a month and help work on each others projects. It helps with the time and you can also learn a great deal from them. I know there is at least three HAMB guys from Buffalo. Good Luck!

  15. I worked for years in a 1 car shed with a small kerosene heater,,I didn't stay warm but didn't freeze,,

I realize that the winters in your neck of the woods is much colder than here in the sunny south,,,but I would thing a torpedo type would keep ya toasty,,,,

BTW,,,,with a lotta hard work it is very possible to have most cars up an running in 6 months,,,,maybe not finished,,,but useable none the less,,,,

In fact my truck was built in 6 months almost to the day of starting it and I helped other people work on their projects at the same time.

Of course,,I'm going into the 5th year of on again off again progress on the 54 wagon project.

It does help to have friends that can lend a hand and another hot rod on the road. HRP

I found getting together with car friends helps alot in passing the long winter months. I also have a couple of other hobbies that aren't car related that helps break up the manotaney.

and yes, chasing your better half around concluding in hot sex is a good idea too.:D

Learn from my mistake. Put 2 layers of plastic down and work over a box if you are going to port your headers inside.

Turn on the heater 15 minutes before you go out, otherwise you will get frustrated by the cold too quick.

Set a goal to do SOMETHING every day, no matter how mundane.

I'm going to print this out and tape it to the door of my work shop, this is the motivation I need to get mine done. 11 years on the back burner and I want to drive it next summer.
Now if someone wants to let us know how to come up with the money(legally) that would help also.

I can't stand winter. For me it's mostly work around the house on projects I let go all summer while I worked on the car. :D My hotrodchick wants to repaint the bedroom. Oh boy!

There is one swap meet in Western MA (Springfield) in January. If the weather's reasonably warm I will go to that. If it's cold, I'll sit by the fire with a cold beer, and a warm hotrodchick. :D

Move south, I plan on riding the roadster Saturday and giving the Harley a workout sunday, hopefully in a t-shirt. I'd rather be shot dead and buried than live "up norte".

  21. Well, I was gonna camp out in the shop all winter, but for some reason this just seams like a much better idea. Seriously though, I'm in Rochester NY and all we do all winter long is work on our rides. I come from a big car family, and we all got a million projects going.

I'm just South of Buffalo, in Hamburg. Come winter it's warmer in the shop than the house. Next swap meet is Jan I think, Cobo Hall for sure, Speed O Rama at the International Centre in Toronto, would love to go to the Pomona Swap & Long Beach again, been too many years since I went West.

Yeah dude, there is a solution:

Get a warm garage and a hot girlfriend. Both help on long cold winter nights.

So you don't have a garage, or is it not heated? The winter is only time I like working on stuff. I take the summer off from wrenching and cruise.

Building time, create a environment to work in and get something done. Its the other half of the fun of being into rods and customs.

Are you SURE there are no swap meets? We get pretty darn cold here (but not as much snow as you) and there's a swap meet just about every other month all winter long

Find some other HAMBers or other car folks and get out and drive every now and then or get together and work on a car. Sure, you'll probably get cold, but what's worse, a little cold and a sense of accomplishment, or warm and cozy, but bored and depressed? Last January we went on a Polar Bear cruise in January. It was -13 when I woke up. My car wouldn't start, but about 20 other pre 65 cars did and drove all over the place garage/shop hopping. I followed in my '01. By the time breakfast was over it had warmed up to -3. :D Really, there's no reason not to do it as long as t he ice and snow have been cleared.
