What is your FAVORITE 4 cyl for a HotRod project? MPG-HP !

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by AHotRod, May 28, 2004.

  1. If you can take a modern I4 and clean it up, why not run it?
If it is sitting in your garage and needing a home, why not install it?
Isn't hot roding about "run what your brung"?

Modern I4's are a little easier to find than Model A bangers, and a hell of a lot easier to find parts for.

Besides the fact the modern I4s can make a lot of HP cheap and reliably...

There are dress up parts to make a Q-4 look more like an Offy. It'l never look completely like an Offy, but it's not a bad target to shoot for.:D

Similarly, I have seen other engines done up to resemble OHV conversions on older flathead engines (no they don't look quite like an A, or B 'banger, but again, they look better than when they started).

All I said was if you don't like this thread go start your own thread, and you twist that to I should go start my own board? grow up.

I didn't say anything about specifically modern I4. I said pro 4 cylinder. That includes 40's & '50's 4 bangers or '90's 4 bangers. Has it squeewed a little from the traditional nature of the board? Yeah a little. But so far it has remained civil and information filled. So it's still open.

If you don't like the idea of 4's (any era) in hot rods don't go into threads about 4's in hot rods. It's quite simple really. I don't care for Camaro's so I don't read Hot Rod. I don't like imports so I don't go the their forums. If I don't like the idea I ignore it. I do the same to people.

BTW 4's were hot rodded before V8's even existed for the common man. You can't our traditional a hopped up 4.

Yeah and they have that pesky habit of being powerful AND efficent AND return more miles per gallon. Which will become a concern as fuel continues to get more and more expensive.

Subies are used in homebuilt aircraft, too.

    An actual file, no.

If that's the inuendo it looks like, if it had that surface texture, I would never 'get' any (I don't believe they would like the corners, or it being that thin, for how wide it is either).

  9. I'm partial to the Cosworth Vega, S-10 T5 transmission.
(probably cause I have one under the bench)

    Good Combo!
Now what am I going to buy to put it in?

great thread, i was getting bored but then noticed a lotta interesting stuff. So here goes. Was in the local pikitapart yard, lookin for a 4 speed column shift [for my 39 buick, ford OD/RUG project] and came across an old 'PEUGEOT', [1953 203] not a bad car, [somebody,s project reject sad to say].But lookin under the hood was a neat little 'HEMI' 4 banger, wow looked like an 'ARDUN' valve cover. anybody know anything about these little baby,s?

I knew a guy that souped up the later 403's
    Might be the same engine...

He would de-siamese the head ( the intakes were all bunched together ) to fit 2 Webers, etc...
I'm pretty sure these engines were popular in NZ and Australia for homebuilt Formula cars/ single seaters.
They were light & strong ( even a forged crank, I believe )

i completely and highly doubt that. the Chevy S-10 is too noble and respectable to be associated with Toyota..By the way, although its not a 4cyl, chevy 4.3's are great engines, and the vortecs put out 190-220 hp, chips are available to increase gas milage ,upgrade hp by 40, and change shift points and what not, runs around $325...god i love s-10s

2005 up Ranger has a Duratec 2.3 with HD Mazda 5 speed. It also has only 4 counterweights and no balance shafts as compared to all other 2.3 so is lighter. The same engine is in the Mazda B23 pickup.

If the engine is going to show, my vote is for the Quad4. With the right parts, it looks passably like an Offenhauser 4.

Actually it was a mid-2001 switch that brought 2.3 DOHC Duratec (it's a Mazda engine) and Mazda M5OD 5 speed into the Ford Ranger/Mazda B2300 line.

The engine is a modern wonder, IMO. The engine is really lightweight. Reportedly just over 200 lbs. In the Ranger/Mazda B setup it has like 145hp and 150 ft-lbs. Perfect for a lightweight rod (like a model t).

from introduction it had either a Izuzu based 1.9 or Caviler sourced 2.0. They were dropped in '85. From '85-'93 it was an Iron Duke at 2.5L.

In '94 the second generation trucks came out and it had the Vortec 2200 which was a decendant of the Caviler engine.

I have a 2.3 Esslinger equipped Pinto in my 26 T rat rod. The engine is straight out of a mini stock race car and it hot as a pistol. When I took it to such venues as Billetproof, Goodguys, Duece Day, Lucky Bastards reliability run, Hot Rod Revolution everyone really dug it....especially the way it sounds. It souds very healthy and yet doesn't soud like a V8. Everyone asks "What the hell you have in that thing?" I get an increadable number of comments on how the car looks and soud.
Right now I have a major engine problem and am looking for someone who knows there way around Esslinger 2.3 's to work on it for me.The problem is a little more than I can manage. Know anyone around Santa Rosa, Petaluma, area?
