    Mr. Whoppit?
The Campbell's were a racing family for two generations
when Donald Campbell set the land speed record for wheel driven vehicles.
The " Bluebird" series of vehicles had been piston powered machines but
the real speed came when Donald Campbell proposed a turbine power plant
from Great Britain's fastest military boats. Armstrong-Sideley manufactured
the 3,000 pound gas turbine which would produce 5,000 hp at 11,000 to 18,000 rpms.

The Bluebird CN7 was four wheel drive with a fluid coupling and no transmission.
The car was heavily crashed at Bonneville in 1960 and was rebuilt with the addition
of a large vertical stabilizer, and a new canopy with a heads-up display so all gauges
could be read without taking ones eyes of of the course. After torrential rains that lasted
nearly a month, the record finally came on July 17, 1964 on the salt flats of Lake Eyer
in South Australia. The record now stood at 403.10 mph. This would be the last
land speed record for Donald Campbell.

After setting the land speed record he set his sights on the water speed record once
again. Donald had held the water speed record on seven separate occasions.
The final run was January 4, 1967 on Coniston Waters in England. The turbo jet
powered Bluebird K7 went airborne and reverse somersaulted at 328 mph
and was destroyed. Divers recovered Donald's helmet, shoes, life jacket and
oxygen mask. Mr. Whoppit, his teddy bear mascot was also found.

The boat was raised in 2001 and is now being restored.
At that time the remains of Donald Campbell, the only man to ever hold the
land and water speed records in the same year were recovered.

When I was a kid I carried a small plastic model of the K7 in my pocket.
I'm still amazed by the technology, engineering and sheer nerve it takes
to become the fastest man alive.

Damn Coop, that is impressive. I've always liked messing around with half tones myself. That thing could easily send someone into an epileptic seizure.
Nice work! Happy Thanks Giving everyone.

    Coop,
I really dig your half-toned helmet painting, that rocks!

I read your blog on it and just wanted to commit on the helmet law, since i've been riding before they ever had one.

I believe that true freedom, does not come from being able to "do" whatever we feel pleased to do whenever we want to.

We have laws (not to keep us from what we want to do) it's for our own safety and protection. Some people are not mature enough to handle or understand why we have such rules.

Parent's are a perfect example of how individuals make rules and regulations to keep their children safe. Some parent's let their kids do and say what ever they want, then ...later on regretting being a lazy and un-loving parent.

Wearing a helmet may "not" look cool to some, but it's sure a wise thing to do while riding a motorcycle:)
I admit ...i've done some un-wise MC riding in the my past:(

Cool helmet and very cool painting indeed!

I'm very thankful to have talent like yours and others to be inspired by on the Hamb weekly.
    cheers,
    CAB

Thanks. I've always been a helmet-wearing pussy, but I totally understand the arguments against them. Like I said, it mirrors the political arguments that have been going on non-stop since 9/11. The star-spangled helmet kinda represents all those things in my mind.

Thanks. Acrylic on canvas. It was pretty brutal painting all those dots, but I'm really happy with the results. And I just stole the idea from Salvador Dali, anyway.
