After some long weeks witohout any job on my project, I finaly spent a day at the garage, and start to work on the header of my 292 chevy 6.
I've started with a set of ebay header flanges, some scrapyard & industrials tubes and elbows...maybe $30 plus the flanges.

Started to bolt the flanges on the engine

    tacked the first elbows

followed the process using 90° elbows to turn around the intake

then, I took a long 4inches or something tube, cut a long triangle on it..

then, rolled it and start to weld the thing

    yeah !

    cut some holes

then, again some time spent on tubes and elbows adjustements,

and voilà ! needs now to spent some hours to finish the weldings, and maybe build a muffler inside...
and with the carbs, air cleaners and the right valve cover...

Very nice, huge improvement over castings. I assume the street system takes off with a big 90° leg straight down from near the end of the cone? I would use the largest OD pipe I could fit here (3"?), because any volume added between the engine and the muffler is worth some power without changing overall backpressure. Paint it flat black and it's almost invisible. You can always add BP with a small cone as a restrictor in the 3" just as it disappears under the car.
If you're not done yet - be careful not to enlarge the ports to match the flange, the pipe ID should be slightly larger than the actual exhaust port shape with NO bevel, radius, chamfer etc.

  11. That's very cool! Home-built headers are a great way to inject some individualism into your project.:D

Looks great, and knowing that you won't see another one just like it any where is cool. I wish I had taken the time to take some pics of the headers I built for my Nailhead when I was doing them. I realized after wards and took some pics after they got back from the coating co. but none during the build. If you think you have alot of bends weled together, you should see mine...
Just don't grind the welds down too much or you might weaken the weld and have cracks all over later.

Nice work, nothing's more time consuming then fabing up a nice set of headers. Maybe someone should make a "Show off your bundle of snakes" thread.... lol... Still clean tho... good job...

Wow! very nice job. You made it look a lot easier than it probably is though. I would have gone through $400 worth of tubing to get half as nice a looking results!

Very cool indeed. Keep us updated with some pics when the header is done.
BTW, that's what I'd call a 'suicide' front end!

I really like the design of your headers. One question: Are you concerned about the effect of the heat generated under your intake manifold?...... just curious.

Usually, this intake is used with a heat plate, added, or if you use the stock exhaust manifold, it's bolted with the intake (pic bellow).
So, I will try like this, maybe it's enough, or if not, will add a heat plate.
