Has anyone on here actually seen, made or used a high mileage carburetor? If so, can you convert a normal carb or do you have to build a whole new beast? Had to ask, I'm tired of getting 12 mpg on my stock 292 chevy w/ 1bbl rochester.

My understanding of those is that they are supposed to actually vaporize the fuel instead of atomizing it (hence the term Vapor Carb). The idea being that if the fuel is a gas it will get more even distribution, allowing you to run leaner (the goal is to run on the way lean side of stoichiometric). I have seen some designs, but never seen one built. Dad's Chiropractor says he has one that he built, never seen it though.

So to answer your question, no about the only thing you might reuse would be the throttle plate and base.

it's a myth, an urban legend.

Go find an exhaust analyzer, put the sniffer in your tailpipe, look at the HC numbers. How much fuel is unburned? not much, eh? (it's measured in parts per million)

Urban Legend, check with Snopes.com. Old henry had a "Vaporizer" carb on 26 and 27 Ts. It was the biggest POS that ever came out of Dearborn.

There is a system like that it's called fuel injection.
expecialy when you use it with a aftermarket ECU like megasquirt you build you own fuel tabels

This makes it possible to run stoichiometric under load and run lean when cruising.

If you can find a copy of The Secrets of Super Milage Carburetors, it's a fun read. Lots of strange designs. Most resemble fuel/air bombs!

A chiropractor has perfected a high mileage carburetor yet is still a chiropractor....

For more humorous reading on this subject, search "Boswell Energy Systems" or "Boswell carburator" on the net and learn about the famed super cycler. I knew George personally - what a wing nut. His innovation eventually let to a 5 year jail term for fraud.

Nearly as stupid is the current yapping by Neil Young about his 59 land yacht that will be getting 100 MPG with a series hybrid deisel. Smoke another bale Neil, and maybe you'll actually believe your own bullshit.

Urban legend? The vendor assured me that I'd double my mileage and reduce emissions by 30%. He assured me that Mobile/Exxon had bought the patent and won't allow them to be produced. (They wouldn't sell enough gas if they became public) These were snuck out of the lab without them knowing. They cost me a couple of hundred a piece but I should be able to recoup my money in a year and a half. After that it's all pure savings.:D He's supposed to have a lifetime battery too, but he didn't give me an address to contact him.:D

Yeah, that's another reason why I'm skeptical (and why I said I had never seen it too).

Not quite the same, but would a Fish carb get him better mileage? Wasn't that one of their claims (and more power too)?

I have that book/magazine somewhere. I like the one they use exhaust to vaprize the gas, injected into the float bowl. Reminds me of the Direct Exhaust Injection guy:rolleyes:.

From what I've seen, the only one that stands a chance of working is Smokey Yunick's Vapor Engine.

He explains a little more of how it works in his last book.

The rest are wishful thinking and Bullshit.

There are all kinds of gadgets out there that claim to increase fuel economy, but none of them have ever really been proven. I guess you can look to the economy in buying a new truck for $25,000 vs and old one for a few $1000, take the diffenece in cool points and gas millage, will you spend 20,000 in gas in the time you own your truck? 20,000 differnece at 3 dollars a gallon is about 6660 gallons of gas, times your 12mpg would be 79920 miles travled. Just a thought.

Use a hydrocarbon sniffer, What squirrel said. If you can't beat 12 mpg with the 292 you might as well put a v 8 in it. A v8 with a well tuned quadrijet can get equal or better mileage than that.

My 396 chevelle gets about 10-12 mpg. The truck used to get 16-20 but I removed the Holley 'economaster' and shortly after it fell through a hole in the bed and got destroyed. Now it's got the Rochester on it and its getting about 12 mpg. If anyones got an economaster they'd be willing to get rid of, let me know.

Years ago I bought a high mileage carb, added the high mileage ignition, high mileage fuel line magnet, high mileage air cleaner. Wound up throwing it all away after a week, it got incredible mileage but the tank kept overflowing...

While working at Ford final assembly plant in the late '70s we got a rack of engines with the weirdest carb I've ever seen. They were put under security and shipped away??

That's it? Put up somthing jucy like that without any more info? Tell us more!

  27. I've got a Holley 4 bbl on my 292 and I get 16 mpg city and 21-22 hwy. When I ran the Rochester 1 bbl I got 14 city and 18 hwy but that carb ran way too rich all the time.

If you really want to improve your fuel economy...

    ...get an overdrive transmission...!

At the very least, run a taller rear tire. You'll lose some acceleration rate, but you'll gain freeway fuel mileage.

Sounds like the famous "variable venturi" 2bbl. to me. You're not missing anything.

True. Computerized fuel injection and an overdrive of some sort will do more for any engine's gas mileage than everything else put together.
