That has to be the most interesting answer to "how do I mount my steering column" in the history of the automobile.

Dunno. Jury's out for me, Scoob...no insult meant, but I see a whoooole buncha work in your near future.

  4. more pics and info PLEASE, kinda like bugs myself....

  5. The original "Lightning Bug" was drag raced back in the early and late 1960's, as an NHRA I/Gasser, by Mark and Paul Schley, who later started Schley Tools...after it died a hoorible death at, I believe it was OCIR, they went on to use the name on a VW powered dragster.. I have some old Super 8 video of both the Bug and the Dragster somewhere.
Regardless, Uncle Scooby, that thing is badass. Short wheelbase, light weight, and way too much power... the perfect combination LOL

  8. If you are a car guy for any length of time, you will own four things:

    1) A vehicle powered by a SBC.
    2) A vehicle that is lacking a SBC.
    3) A SBC that is lacking a vehicle.
    4) A VW Bug that needs "a little work".

You, my friend, have managed to blow through most of that list with one shot. Keep up the good work. I think it rocks.

Yeah, I've just come in from several hours of beergeneering on this thing and am quite torn. No doubt it's still a monster project. The body is killer. No rust at all which is weird because I'm pretty sure that came standard on the 62's. The chassis isn't rusted either.
When I finally vacuumed the mounds of rat shit out of this thing and felt like sitting in it was no more unsafe than dating a hooker, realized the incredible potential for death in this car. Obviously, that is the appeal of this thing, but...
My neighbor the chassis builder came over and shook his head in disbelief like he always does and said, "why don't you ever just let me shoot you?"
He's really thinking I should put a new chassis under it but I don't see spending that kind of time and dough. He does have me considering pulling that 1940 Ford front end and putting in a GM straight axle with some real brakes that I've got. It's not like you really see it anyway. That front end needs to be on someones else's hotrod probably. It does have lapbelts which is similar to just wearing the ring of a condom and I don't think the fiberglass dash would hurt as badly at 100MPH as a steel one. I really like the fact that I can't see any part of the car past the dash when I'm lodged comfortably in the back seat.

On the plus side, this is BY FAR the less weird of the two cars I bought this week. The other one isn't even really a car. It's something the fell out of space in the early 60's. I won't even bother with that one yet but it might get seen someday if I my wife ever gives me custody of my testicles. It's part corvair and 1000% more bizarre than that 426 HEMI gasser corvair I had. While I'm pleasantly surprised at the support of this car, I don't think I'll push my luck on the other one.

The other plus side is that I spend the whole day making room for this in the garage and found a ton of neat shit I forgot I had that I can sell to fund this project a little. I also drank a bunch of mexican beer. I'll only be grateful for one of these accomplishments later.

Let me put it this way.........

If everyone that posted on this thread can get someone in close proximity to them pop them on the arm and yell SLUG BUG and I get credit for calling it then I'm cool with it being on the HAMB.

It reminds me of a couple of years back my buddy found a 65 21 window, a wagon of some sorts, and like a 58 or 60 bug for a grand and flipped them quicker than shit for like 5 grand.

Dragging those vw's out of the yard they were in to this day still brings back some memories.

    Cool find.

Don't tell anyone but I used to read HotVW and always enjoy the Big Bug Shootout. Put one of you turbonics on it. Uncle Scooby has all the best toys.

Oops....I thought this post was about tits. My "favorite two things." But that wouldn't fit this forum unless those tits were all trussed up in a fabulous fifties torpedo bra and draped over flat black. Hmmm........
