Thanks for the link to the NOVI running. Awesome just don't cover it. Here are some pics of a ohc sbc that was a prototype. I'll post a link to the thread were I found them. http://forum.olskoolrodz.com/showthread.php?t=21805
you i know about the Ford 427 SOHC cammer they built for NASCAR ? in i think 1967...(Ford dust and glory vol. 1) wicked motor 650 hp and 7000+rpm 427 vintage Nascar is awesome
I saw one on display at the Detroit Autorama about 25 years ago. Story was that it never ran under it's own power, but that it was spun up using an external power source to check the valve actuation. That's when it broke something, after which the project was dropped. Steve
late 70's mercedes had a really cool 4.5 liter v8, and a 6.3 liter too. Stock they are full of smog and fuel injection (later) but stripped they aren't bad looking. The valve/camshaft covers are aluminum and have a cool shape. The bummer is it is hard to find a stock manual gearbox setup, and they have a front sump oil pan. The positive is they rev high and are cheap and plentiful. I have one waiting its turn but it'll have to wait. I;ll have to find a pic. TP
They were never sold in Mustangs Shelby or not.......that I know of. Great pic though, from Ford testing IIRC.
You may be right Steve.....I'll dig up the article on it and post more info....at the time of the article, it was owned by a private person, not in some collection or by Chrysler..... http://www.nz-hotrod.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=27824#post27824
The USA delivered 4.5 is a stone. The 3.5 as delivered everywhere else is a nicer engine. The designation is M116. The 6.3 is a M-100, Absolutely awesome cars...0-60mph 6.5 seconds as tested by Road and track with two different cars in 1968. Don Garlits did a road test for car and driver where he drove one across the USA. The biggest high perfomance car secret ever ,and thats why I love blowing the doors off late model alleged aussie muscle cars and jappas driven by folks who have never heard of a 6.3 ,with Grandad's old merc.... The engines are pretty ugly outside a car ( I have quite a few here, including a 6.9 ) and don't look too good in a roadster...done that too. www.M-100.cc
There are also stories of a dual o.h.c 455 Olds...as I recall, it was real similar to the Hemi power wise... it made stupid power. at 6500 r.p.m., it boiled the water in the dyno and shut down the power for a wing of the g.m. testing facilities...the article said people came out of thier offices and into the hallway to find the source of "The bellows of this most potent Olds running through headers into open metal exhaust tubes...a guttaral roar of power." it sounds better if you imagine James Earl Jones saying it.
In Dayton Ohio I saw a '32 coupe with a Mazaratti ohc v8 at a snobby corvette show at the Steak and Shake on 741. It's owned by some cool rich old guy. The car has the # 78 painted on the door. He said that was his age when the car was built. Look for it at the local Dayton area shows and you will poo your panties when you find it. Sick.
This engine is largely ignored by the hot rod community. Why I don't know. Yes it does'nt fit in with the "old engine" requirement. 'Course a new 350 is not an old engine either and I wish I had a dollar for every one of them I've seen. Anyhow this Ford 4.6/5.4 engine family is pretty good for hot rods. First it makes the new GM LS engines look like warts. Second it's potent and has a good aftermarket following. Third it's rear sumped and VERY short in overall length. Fourth it's a Ford V8 so it can add some authenticity to that extra special Ford based build. No?
No. I could never bring myself to put something with a ugly Serpentine Belt clusterfuck like that into my vintage Ford...
'Shapes.... I agree it's not and never will be a vintage engine but it's a hell-uv-a lot better looking than an LS1 or an sbc with the $39.95 parts store chrome kit, oh and don't forget the fat bright yellow plug wires and red wire loom wrapping I see all over those same poor old Fords you're talking about.
turbo 6.9....a stock 450SEL 6.9( no turbo...) will go 0-60 in 7.5 seconds, just over 100mph in first gear.... 6.3 with EFI and headers.
mercmad - you don't think the 4.5 would scoot a 2000lb car better than the sedan? What years did the 3.5 come out? TP
3.5's came out from 1967 through to 1976 and were in sedans ( W108 280 SE 3.5 ,W109 300SEL 3.5 through to the 350SEL W116) and the coupes (W111 280SE 3.5 and W107 350SL/SLC ) In a light car ,sure ,I'd recommend one because they are cheap to buy and a whole car can be bought for peanutas here in OZ. But the later alloy block engines are the grunters,500's and 560 's. The USA 4.5 is a smog engine with low compression and 190HP compared with the high comp Euro engines with 225 hp from a 3.5 liter engine.
MERCMAD-thanks for the mercedes info. Didn't know the;y were so de-tuned. oh yeah that link is cool, crazy machinists! tp
Back around 1974 the McGee family built a 4 cam V8 for drag racing(they were speedway engineers/fuel injection specialists)and put it in a chassis that was driven by Peter Dykes.Eventually they took it to the USA and stirred up the troops with it.I think NHRA eventually banned that as well, even trying to ban all OHC motors.Aussie Sue Ransome drove it for a while over there. There is a Sainty motor/engine in the old Gene Snow Funny Car that runs over here in the nostalgia series.I don't know what happened to all the McGee family business over there.Maybe I should find out.Keep on roddin'.
Well there you go.A quick google check and I find out that McGee's are still going, building and racing Junior dragsters including the motors.Go to www.mcgeecams.com and read all about it.Definitely a great story and one of those unsung heroes that you hear don't hear about.Back in the 60's we used to go to their workshop at Kings Cross after the speedway meets on a saturday night and catch some of the post race talk.Keep on roddin'.
I just found this link which refernces the DOHC 455. http://www.classicoldsmobile.com/tech/32.shtml Also wikipedia mentions a experimental SOHC 427ci Pontiac Hemi. Also lists a 389 dohc 4valve but gives no information on this.
technically not a production engine since it was never fired and only made as a prototype to scare the nascar guys , its probably a bit to modern for some of you but I noticed pics of the 427 cammer so will post it anyway
If memory serves, Stutz built a dohc straight 8, 4 valve engine in the early 30s. Called it DV32. Dan
