I am handy with everyting but a welder and am intersted in building a nostalgia dragster. I am not talking about one of those long pointy things but about the next generation earlier with the more squared off front ends. Who is bulding this type of chassis in a quality way with a reasonable price?
Why not get good with a mig,and build your own chassis, with mild steel tube?? Something like a Chassis Research K-88 would be cool. Under 9.90 wouldn't need a cert.(check to be sure)
Do a search of 'Scotty Fenn" 'Chassis Research" T.E. 440, K-88 etc. Scotty used to sell pre-bent kits for his mild steel dragsters..but long ago...LONG ago........
I too would love to get my hands on some of those plans/blueprints and I also am a bit slow on what is what on that earlier stuff! Have been looking for plans/blueprints on later 60's early 70's FED!! Any thing would be great I don't mind paying for the right stuff! Would be happy to weld up a car for anyone (just a few cans of jim beam and cola) Only problem would be that you would have to fly me over the big POND!! Thanks DAN
This should help give you a start or and idea.............When dragsters where dragsters, non of this 170'' to 200+'' long dragsters........I like them 150'' or shorter, I do understand why they have made them longer over time, just do not like the look........Goodluck, Littleman
Could I get a look at that motor if it's not to much trouble. A little info about it to if it's not a bother.
Dan, there are enough of us Aussies over here clogging up the system, we don't need any more <VBG> Especially a crow eater like yourself! Roo
Hello. Does anybody now what type of tubing they used in the chassis back in the 60`s. How thick? I have to change some of the tubing on my ca. 65 FED. Br Kjell ------------------------- Taildragger&fenderless
Why not just cut out the bad piece and determine it from there. It's pretty easy to identify Chromoly(4130N) from Mild steel (1020) Huge difference in strenght - just try and bend it - it'll be obvious. That's what I'd do if it were me. YMMV
Thanks! But the problem is that the exsisting tubes, just have less than 1/16 inch thickness ? Br Kjell
To determine if tubing is chrome moly or mild steel, cut a piece about 1 in. long, heat to cherry red- quench immediatly in water-then smack it with a hammer. If it breaks into several pieces it's c/m, if it just flattens out it's mild steel.
maybe a little off the subjets but what are the rules for nostalgia dragsters in the US?, what does the frame have to be made of?, does it make a different how fast your car goes? this is a pic of my 1958 dragster that i'd like to run one day when i get it back togather ofcourse.
Kjell, if the tubing is less than 1/16" thick it is most likely 4130. Most cars in that era had frame rails made out of .049 or .058 tubing if they were moly. A mild steel car would most likely have been quite a bit thicker. Dan, on the subject of plans I have a couple of different sets for late 60's/ early 70's style front motor cars and both are NHRA/ANDRA legal. Roo
Are you guys interested in slingshot dragsters or something from an earlier era. We have developed a drag racing class here on the HAMB. They are called HAMB GAS RAILS or HA/GR. They are a blast. Most of them are built as a team effort. Our flathead rail has run a best of 12.41 at 109 in the quarter. That kind of speed can really get your blood pumping. We have our own forum area on the HAMB site. You can check it out under Events, HAMB Drag Nationals, HA/GR. I love the early slingshot dragsters of the early sixties but HA/GR is a great place to start. If you've never driven a dragster, you'll be surprised how much there is to learn.
Dirty 2 Dont know if you rember me but used to live in McKinney now Columbus OH. Have black Model A with flames and WWW slicks. met you at Kellers?
