My girlfriend is totally cool with all the car crap in and around the house, rebuilding carbs on the coffee table, etc. The biggest deal for me is that she'll tape me up when I spring a leak. She's getting really good at it. :D

My wife doesn't understand my yearning for another old vehicle. My last old car was a '71 Chevelle I sold right before we met. At the time I didn't care about getting another car. The past couple years I've been dying for another...mid '5 0's Chevy p/u or an old station wagon. The things that have been holding me back was the wedding (this past September ) and now we want to start having kids. I don't know If I'll ever get another. But I'm hopeful.

To answer the question...she doesn't get it.

My wife and I are going on 35 years. Yesterday, out of the blue she says "Ya know I was just thinking, we have three trucks and five cars". I said "Yea, is that a bad thing?" She just smiled and shook her head. That's about as supportive as I can hope for.

My girl is great! We are in the process of building a 65 c10 for her. She orders parts for it almost weekly! She's always there helping me work on my junk too...Even when wrenches are flying around! When my wallet's running a little thin, she gives me cash to spend at the junkyard!! I'm pretty damn lucky... She's awesome...

It helps that all her brother's and her Dad are car-nuts like me...

I'm just getting into this car thing. Have an old Impala that I've neglected for years, and just found a shoebox that I hadda have. She very reluctantly agreed to think about selling the Impala, and fell in love w/ the Ford when I brought it home.

My other hobby, music, she's great about. Comes out sometimes, but not all the time, and is very encouraging/supportive/critical in a helpful way. It's good.

My wife's put up with me for over 30 years now and she's been hotrodder since day 1. She believes in oldtin and that they should sit low and be drivers.. Suffice to say we've logged a bunch of hiway miles in our rides. She currently designed, paid for and helped work(heard the F-Bomb more than once when she popped a nail sanding parts) on her all steel 37 Ford Club Cabriolet. The cars got over 14000 miles on it in 3 seasons of cruising. Damn now she tells me she'd like something in suede and/or metalflake. Being ever obedient I guess we've gotta do another project. By the way she's a big Nascar Fan too.............

My wife was always supportive, although not involved in the actual building side of my cars. Then I blew it big time...

She was in hospital, she'd just had our third child, and I was so engrossed in working on my model A that I missed a visiting hour, so she didn't see me or the two older kids that day.

But I think she's forgiven me now. That baby's now 22 years old and married, and I discreetely raised the question of an 'old car' to do up (older than my current 70's ride that is) She just sort of smiled and said if the money was there then it wouldn't be a problem, but she didn't want me spending all my time in the shed, so I'd have to buy a decent one to begin with.

    That's good enough for me!

    Cheers, Glen.

My loves my merc because I do. When my 15 year old daughter wanted to built her first car 68 Firebird, my wife loved it because I customized one for her when we got married 31 years ago.

I have learned it's not even worth it to date a non-car guy. Trust me I've tried. Last one was a white collar, tie kinda guy. Great job, nice personality, nice looking guy YET there was nothing there. After the normal pleasent dinner table conversation was over we really had nothing in common. I've come to the conclusion I would rather spend a Saturday evening with a car pal, carryout and a couple of movies then go out on a "real" date with a non-car guy. Of course in the summer season a Saturday night cruzn with Big Olds is all I really need.:D

It might not seem like it BUT finding a SINGLE car guy that your compatible with is just as tough as finding a gal that will "support" your hobby.

Sorry to hear your marriage is over bud.

My wife is amazing. She was not really into cars when we met, but took an interest because of me. Now she goes with me to shows, auctions, drag races, etc. She has bought me car stuff and tools for Christmas, birthday, etc since our first Christmas together. She has drooled over the 1950 Ford club coupe of a family friend since she first saw it and has been determined to get ahold of a 1971-72 Chevelle since the first cruise we went to together. She even let me plan our vacation around the Nostalgia Drags in Arkansas City, KS this summer. I'm tellin ya, it doesn't get any better!

my wife supports me. She pushed me to start my business and loves going to car shows and just cruising. She reads my TRJs all the time and enjoys welding and giving me a hand whenever i need her.

-My ex-wife and I split, basically due to her not understanding my infatuation with all things automotive. She was cool with it, until we got married...then slowly, she began to push more and more... She'd bitch about all of my unfinished projects, but then she would complain louder if I actually went out to work on them. Finally, she started INSISTING that I sell some of my cars... My attitude is, that she knew who I was, and what I was all about when we were dating...it was sheer folly on her part to think that once the ring was on, she would change me...
I was discussing this a couple of weeks ago with some fellow HAMB'ers... I've been working on my own stuff for years, but I'm new to HAMB, new to shows and get-togethers, and just now getting to know some fantastic people! Reason being...the ex-who didn't support anything like this that I wanted to do.
I now have a wife who doesn't get it...but, who supports it. She'll allow me to spend my money on parts, and cars. She o.k.'s the summer vacations that revolve around car shows-and she pretends to listen when I ramble on about old car stuff.
Point being...ya' gotta-gotta-gotta have a family that supports you, or it just doesn't work. I've done it both ways, and believe me...I'm MUCH happier now. I also have a family that is much tighter, due to the bonds and friendships we've made through this lifestyle...
