Did ya ever meet a nicer guy?? whats the skin off of, i bet i remember it !! yea i knew he was gonna have that auction, but he still has more what did the helmet bring??
I was at the Bonham's sale last weekend. The Von Dutch stuff went high or I guess you would say par. I thought the Roth stuff was cheap. His brief case was $1700. They were selling off a bunch of the signs that Roth and Dutch had painted for the various cars at the Brucker's museum.I'll try to post pictures later.
Here's a picture of Dutch's bus as it sat at Bruckers before they cleaned it up and sent it to auction. It was interesting that there never was a "formal" business relationship between Dutch and the Bruckers. Dutch did work for them if it was interesting to him, and he would ask the Bruckers for a few hundred dollars now and then when he needed it. Suppoosedly Dutch never even had a social security card or number. Roth was actually a payroll employee as I understand.
Bob, Research eventually proved that car to also be the 1933 500 winner, driven by Louis Meyer. It ran in three more Indy 500s after that. Car went to Richard Freshman (Fossil Motorsports) in 1994. Freshman bought the car's original engine from David Uihlein and put it together with the car, which was already under restoration (Pete Eastwood had worked on it.) Was put up for auction as an uncompleted project via RM in 2002...I don't know if it sold at that point. It may still be with Freshman? Cris
THANKS Cris! This is one of the great things about the HAMB. So many questions get answered and additional info gets out there so the historical record of things is p***ed along. I took about 3-4 photos of the car back in 1975, it had a flathead in it at the time with a Ford rear as well. The car sat really low, had at least 6 shades of paint on it, but underneath you knew it was a real gem.
Not to jack my own thread and do a subject change or nuthin.......but.......When Von Dutch p***ed I went to the Kustom Kulture exibit, and spent hours listening to Von Dutch stories told by all the old timers. My favorite: A painter needed a car striped so he could deliver it the following day, well Von Dutch didnt feel like striping that night and wasnt going to do it! So they kidnapped him and locked him in the shop with a couple six packs and a carton of smokes and left him their for the night. The following morning they arived to let him out and he had striped everthing in the shop (toilet seat, file cabinet, doors, fridge, etc) exept the car they needed done. His reply was I told you I didnt feel like striping the car, thanks for the beer.
The helmet was expected to go for uwards of 75K. It "only" sold for 28K....plust auctioneers fees and tax. Door was from his El Camino delivevry truck. It's the flamed door.
I have a small stack of ***les for my car and movie world owned it for a few months in the early 70's any way to find out what that means?
Bruckers wanted cash flow, i had a meeting with them and presented my ideas. I started a sales division for them. I went up to the warehouse in Santa Paula and took what i thought would seel without to much work to be done. After that i bought and sold cars for them ,at one time we ran ads worldwide and had a good market. We also had the first auction on the West Coast at Movieworld. Quite a pre auction party for those days, James Garner and others were there as celebritys. Years later upon returning from my living in Hawaii i saw Jim jr. at an Auction i was at. He told me to come back to work for him, said i was the only guy that ever made him money. I was in the prcess of opening Cl***ic Cars in Anaheim so that never happened. Shortly thereafter they closed the place.
KOOL THANKS KNOTHEADS. NOW YOU HELPED COMPLETE MY STORY. HOW DO YOU KNOW OF GAYLORD? I SPEND 9 YRS OF MY LIFE WORKING FOR THE MAN. HELL OF A NICE GUY. HARD TO GET HIM TO TALK OF THE OLD DAYS BUT ONCE YOU DO YOU BETTER HAVE A COUPLE HOURS TO LISTEN.
what a cool thread! i was lucky enough to go there in 76' and i seem to remember the 65' or 66' impala that was the back half only they used to shoot scenes of the stars riding in the back seat. i also remember the look on my moms face when i took one of those prop guns, they were make of rubber but looked real and bashed my brother in the head after we faked a argument. my dad caught hell after she found out it was his idea. wow! sure glad this thread got started, good memories.
My favorite things in there ,were the cars from "The Great Race",the submarine, the torpedo, the baloon/bicycle. Probably the coolest thing was the metal skelleton of the stop-animation King Kong. It was in a gl*** case. I bought MANY models from the Gift Shop too! Still have my Roth models(in the box!). Darryl, his youngest son,has trying to get them from me for years,HA HA! If I remember right, the first Ratfink Reunion was held there. I used to have the shirt from it. It was pink. I let Darryl borrow it to make a sign for the Wishbone(one of Roth's cars, that he hated)he was putting in a carshow at the Anaheim Convention Center(early 80's)and never saw it again.
Hey, Does anyone know how "Professor Fate's" (Jack Lemon) from The Great Race, car got into the Peterson Museum from the brucker collection? Donation?, hah! purchase? S****ey Devils C.C.

Also there was the old batmobile, robbins bike, madmax car, a couple of tanks and a General Lee. Is this the same guys? I never got their names but we sat for a half hour talkin cars and then I left. the same day I got hired building restored VW bugs. Man do I wish i woulfd have taken the movie car gig instead.

Wasn't there some kind of "Cars of the Stars" place on Hollywood Blvd. around 1974-1975? I recall being at such a place when my family vacationed in California around that time. There was a Monkeemobile, a Batmobile, the sonny and Cher Mustangs and several other famous cars as well. Am I remembering that right?
I almost grew up at Brucker's warehouse in Santa Paula--remember Dutch putting on his "Von Dutch "act --he would do it once it a while for magazine-types that would show up.The best was one day a couple of us came by the warehouse to help Danny Brucker do some car stuff---and Roth was there with Dutch. Roth had brought some guy with a high-dollar pellet gun--made in Germany,I think. Dutch sets up a piece of wood with a sheet metal backing ---says fire away. Guy shoots 10-12 rounds at the wood--and most stick. Dutch goes into his shop--comes out with this---thing. It was his pellet gun--I think it was maybe a conveted air hammer / air drill---some kind of a Frankenstein-like deal.Plugs an air hose into it--and POW! He shoots maybe 4--5 times---ALL go throught the wood--and almost the metal behind it. Dutch turns to the guy--says "THATS a pellet gun! I think I may have met you at Bruckers' Cruzr---I hung around there from around 75 till the late 90's--still see Danny every now and then.
RH willie.. kool..very kool. then you might had seen any one of the 10 herbies from the love bug, or herbie rides again movies.. That Jim owned.. the last being #2 from the love bug first movie.. which was sold to a kat in santa barbara /santa yenz.. then to florida, now its in the uk.. that was porshe powered 356 prepped by the orig empi boys..(car 1 & 2..) car #1 is being restored by my friend in chicago area, it was a rear seat driver.. any one have any other infor.. that would help a humble herbie guy peice together some of our cars past..thanks.. dave G LOL FNG??..F'ing new guy ..right
I don't know how I had never stumbled across this in my searches in the past, and here, my buddy Kool1's on here helping me. I'm the owner of the "Dr. Herbie" that came from museum. I'd love to hear any stories that anyone has remembering my car or even old pictures.
Missed this thread the first time around. When the Anaheim Convention center was done, SEMA moved the show from Dodger Stadium to the new facility. The exibitors ****tail party was held at the Cars of the Stars facility and the booze was flowing like water. Roth was there holding court to the delight of many of the wives. The "cars of the stars" museum on Hollywood Blvd. was a Petersen Publishing project. If I remember correctly, Pete own the building and had trouble renting it and turned it in a museum. They pulled out all the stops with a Hollywood-style grand opening, complete with a red carpet, limo's and kleig lights. i got over served at that party too!
Are you talking to the place by Gillespie Field on North Magnolia? I used to go there from time to time when I first moved to San Diego...that place was jammed full of stuff and they used to keep a jar and ask for a donation to help cover the overhead
Just found this form when looked up old memories, "MovieWorld". I hired on to Picture Car Co .in L.A. back in aug.69 . My job was to deliver cars to the studios and transport them between warehouses in Santa Paula & Saticoy. In 70 when James F Sr.and his wife Ida opened the museum I was the one who hauled and or drove the collection and we set up all displays. James loved movie props so when MGM had their auction he picked up many including the "Ben Hur" chairs which I helped Ida to refinish for the lobby. Just a little history have much to tell
