2X4's were 2X4, or at least close...then twice the standard was officially altered, I think the last time in the 1970's. I tink I posted on this way above...lumber standards committee. I've seen the whole progression somewhere, but could not find it for this thread. If your 2x4's are too small, you need to find an older house...don't buy a house built much after WWI.

2x4 is the rough sawn size, before finishing...right?

I got to work in a WWII temporary wood building in the 1980s on Ft Huachuca. It looked like it had real 2x4s in it, but no way to know now, it was demolished in the 90s.

these days you can use 1 1/2" x 3 1/2" pretty accurately when framing.

2x4s vary in size, seems like every year, they get smaller and wetter.

"Kiln Dried" doesn't mean shit to these guys.

Ok so what is a Diopter in metric....everything else in optics is metric.....angle of refraction...is equal to the angle of incedence....in what ...degrees? LOL loved reading all 8 pages of this thread. Me, I am SAE on my cars and bi-lingual in my job.

If you're bi-lingual, you don't need to worry about it, just use the subject as a source of entertainment like I do...

    Who died??

    LMAO:D :D

I had to go through 2 bundles of 2X6s to find enough of them that were straight enough to make the rafters in my sister's new greenhouse, most were warped, the rest were split.

Guess that's what hapens when most of the lumber seems to be made to a 'Walmart' spec. :(

    The acidemic answer is.....

Lumber is cut to the 2"x4" dimension. It is still quite wet at this point. It is then dried. Usually in an oven, which must of use know as a kiln. Once dried to a certain moisture (or lack there of) content (~15%) it is removed from the kiln. At this point, due to shrinkage from the loss of the moisture, the wood has shrunk to ~1-1/2"x~3-1/2" (usually very close to that).

Once you surpass '2x6' the numbers change again.

If you don't like my answer you can take it up with my construction materials professor, who is a licensed architect as well. :D

Good lumber is bought at lumber yards 99% of the time. The other 1% of the time you can find one or two decent boards at the discount big box stores. They are discount for a reason. For small projects they suffice. For any real project go to the same place the real contractors in the area go. That's where the good wood can be bought.

The surface on commercially available 2x4s is not rough sawn.
It was been planed on 4 sides.

When I'm buying Kiln Dried hardwood,it is below 10%,
and doesn't move significantly after i get it home.

2x4s are closer to 20% if you are lucky, probably over that,
and most will move as they continue drying.

Actually a lot of plywoods are metric.

You can get some really good birch ply from Russia (they used to call it Baltic ply) that comes in (about) 5' X 5' sheets. I use it in cabinet making.

    Good question because where I live they're 1 1/2 X 3 1/2

It's because it was 2" X 4" before it was milled.
