The Black Beauty used in the 'Green Hornet' TV show was built by Dean Jeffries. He also built the Monkee-mobile. After the TV shows were cancelled the studio offered the cars bcak to Jeffries but he thought the price too high (I think it was $2500 each!) and a canny Barris bought both. George used them for years and everyone ***umes he built them.

Dean's best work though is the Mantaray, an outrageous bubbbletop custom built on Grand Prix Maserati ch***is. It's in the Peterson museum and it's all metal -not fibergl***.

I love the car. You don't see many of them. I have a 66 300 and wouldn't trade it for anything. My dad has a 70 newport that is kind of factory blacked out and looks like a mafia car. I am glad to see some interest in big mopars and glad the derbies banned the imperials. I Am not sure but I think the lincolns and these were both designed by Elwood Engle. alot of similarity

Real nice to see another Imperial that is cared for!
To read about Imperials getting ruined by "derby-racing" makes me sad.

I've had my -64 Crown Coupe for two years now and I love it. The only problem is a one car garage and dreams about a -51 Merc coupe... Though, if I can get good storage for the Imperial I will keep that one as well.

  7. I talked to a guy at a derby who was running an Imperial convertible with the top from another one welded on it. Apparently the frames in those are beefed up even more... but that's how crazy the demo guys are for them. Around here, they're still legal for most derbies but rules vary from fair to fair. One year, the big State Fair championship derby they had like 8 of them show up.. I was surprised, some guys left them behind to be s****ped.

I like the 61-63 version, myself, but the 64-68 is nice too. Nothing like crusing down the highway on your living room couch -

That's really nice Scotty.....I'm diggin' it!
Ya know, I've been 'eyeing' these mid-60's C-body Mopars lately....as they are cheap, generally in good condition, and have BULLETPROOF BB running gear. It doesn't hurt that with the sculpted body lines a guy can get crazy with some panel painting......
But the big kicker is my wife like's some of 'em too.....so I see one of these luxo-land-barge cruisers in my future....

    Thanks for posting!

My buddy has a few imperials that he runs in non-sanctioned derbies. Apparently the bumpers from the 74 Impala wagons brigng good money to the e-bay derbyers and he sells them and welds Imperial bumpers on his impalas. He also runs suicide door lincolns and take out the motors and puts 360 Chryslers in there. You can run them hot forever before they blow on you. He actually has a pretty nice convertible that he is gonna weld a top off another one on and run it. It's nuts the money those guys blow just to smash up a car!

    HA HA!

Built 440 big block, and a tank of an imperial = unstoppable destruction!

Head out to Rock Springs Wyoming sometime and check out the Imperial Derbies. There must have been 30 cars there this year.

  12. Ex drag racer Herb McCandless has driven one on Power Tour many times. I believe his is a little older as it has the free standing head lights and gun sight tail lites on top of the fenders. Big white four door fully optioned with 440 power. Awesome hiway cruiser.

  13. You don't know... and don't get you *** kicked next time you are out here.

Mushroom head is looking for you

Nice Imperial! I have a certain weakness for 60's Mopars...

I talked to a guy from Long Beach 2 years ago at Paso with a VERY similar Imperial... I think it was light blue metallic with a deep candy blue roof and running ripple caps? You ever see that one?

Definitely check out the Los Boulevardos site...

not any more this was the last year for the imps in rock springs they are outlawed now they decided they would all run 80s ltd's and volvos

  17. Actually I'm pretty good at it! Those things **** **** up. We would never crash one that was worth saving. Besides, they're banned now so we moved on to 58-69 Lincolns. Ha Ha.

  18. really cool car

  19. You read my mind, I remember reading that in the rules every year at the Thrill Show in the Astrodome. I used to love destruction derbies, now the idea makes me sad. All-import derbies would make me very glad!:)

    P.S. I love that car.

Barris bought none of them. He did broker the sale of one of the cars from the studio to the next owner. He built his own and showed that one then years later built two more in a week end (Actually **** Dean but the two week end cars)

Had a '66 back in '79. That car had a cig lighter in each of the 4 doors, 2 in the back of the front seat, and a large wide ashtray with 2 more in the dash!

Anyone know where this car ended up? I sold it, and then noticed it on CL shortly after because the guy had no room to park it!?!
