It is a tight fit but I like how it turned out. With it sitting so close to the cross piece of the X it really cuts down on the "visual clutter" and makes it look a little cleaner.

As for steering, yes I have a F100 box, column, wheel, pitman arm, etc. I haven't gotten to the mounting stage yet... At first i was leaning toward cowl steering but now I'm thinking about frame mounting the box. Not sure how I'll do it yet, but rest assured there will be pics!

    Bitch'n hot rod.

As a minor point, my pickup has a rear suspension just about identical to yours. I found that without a panhard bar, the sway in turns put the tire into the side of the pickup bed. With the panhard installed, no problem. My truck has pretty big skins on the back, so you might not have the same problem, but don't be shocked if you do. Not sure that the handling is much different one way or the other.

Yeah, I've gotten advice from both sides on that one. Transverse leaf and triangulated links should be OK, but as you know nothing is 100%. For now it will be run without, but if the need arises it shouldn't be too hard to add.

I plan to put 500+ shakedown miles on it before any paint and powdercoating, so I'll have time to make changes.

Hey Man, lots of experience with small blocks, I would use the comp cams 268 extreme energy for your 350. It pounds on the idle and makes power to 6000 and will work with stock converter. I've had the 270 in my El Camino and switched to the 268 extreme and it's as different as day and night. The coupe looks right.

    Get busy bro,

It looks like you are doing a hell of a job.

and good choice of after market parts.

the only thing I would change is, I think you need to gusset that tranny mount. You will be suprised by how much weight ends up back there.
I would put a verticle gusset to a plate that also bolts to the X member sides.

You have a lot of weight cantilevered out there on those four bolts. I know from repairing a similar set up.

otherwise keep up the good work.

    cheers

This is my first time seeing this thread and I am blown away. Nice job dude looks so good. I like the tire combo and the stance is perfect. I will try to glance back from time to time, once again great job.

This is a good point. I don't feel like doing a static analysis of the setup, but I know that there is a decent amount of weight being supported back there. I have feeling that if I end up gusseting it a little farther forward I will end up just moving the whole mount and I'm torn on that one. Right now I know it will support the engine/tranny weight plus my 200 lb body weight jumping on it. The wheels in my head are still turning...

    Thanks.
I don't think I can put into words how humbled I am by the comments in this thread. I'm just a 23 yr old guy working in the garage on nights and weekends hoping he can end up with something semi-presentable.
My first car was a 71 Chevelle (I know, not HAMB friendly)... but a good deal of my hands on mechanical knowledge comes from that. I even had some work on that car featured on some websites. I actually sold that car just so I could build this one, and this is my first groundup build. I'm over here trying to put some of my engineering schooling to work and hoping i dont screw up to badly and I end up with people complimenting all of my work!

My goal is to be on the road in time for the Lonestar Roundup (first weekend of April)... cross your fingers for me!

It has a 4" chop and ~6" channel. I didn't do work (bought the body how it is right now) but I will try to get some pics in the next few days.

I've slowed down, and that's bad!

Engine and tranny are painted and back in the car. Will have a full shot tomorrow.

    OK, it finally went outside.

10 weeks ago I had a bare perimeter frame. Today I have this:

Now it's time to get the body ready to go back on. Back to the garage!

  19. Great build, but I've got to agree with Redbeard on the trans mount. I've seen one break due to metal fatigue next to the weld. My $.02. good looking project, nice work.

Yeah, the load is a bit cantilevered. I've taken some measurements and thought about the best way to gusset it... I just haven't done it yet.

    Thanks, Eric :)
You'll get some pics with the body on as soon as I get 3 more people to help me lift it!

I have 12 more weeks until my deadline.

I decided I didn't want to have to go to the Lonestar Roundup without a car again. :D

I want it on the road by 3/19/08. That will give me 2.5 weeks to put a couple hundred shakedown miles on it before the 200 mile road trip.

    91 days to go.

    Stage 2 has commenced!

Had some help from Danny and Kelly (Gotgas and blkf250diesel) and a co-worker. Got the body on the car, and started planning for the next few days.

"Hmm... maybe leave it like this?"

"Holy shit, I have a real looking car! Get a picture of me in it!"

I have decided that I am going back to the original Special Coupe configuration, which is why the top is painted black in these pics. It will end up a true special coupe, chopped 4 inches. All the wood, the "leatherback", etc.

    89 days to go.
