    What's wrong with eBay ... ?
    http://cgi.ebay.com/1940-New-York-W...ryZ14037QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

The World's Fair on the 1940 New York tags most likely runs the price up just a little  and all the 40 Ford folks too. Most any license plate collector or antique store wants 20 dollars or more for a desirable single. Time you factor in the time and gas you waste looking for one elsewhere ... lots of the time eBay is actually cheaper.

I bought this one off eBay the other day ...

Where else would a guy from the Carolinas find a COPPER Arizona plate for such little money :)

Just be glad you do not need a Sample 1932 plate from Hawaii ... it is on eBay for a grand ...

That's correct but they did have plates with 2 letters and 2 numbers. It's just the one between MY-56 and MY-58. What are the odds of me finding it. It was listed on Epay and I was highest bidder, did not meet reserve. I contacted seller and worked a deal. I only had to drive 13 miles from were I work to meet him. What's also cool my car and plate are unrestored (car has one repaint). A previous thread had a quote from another H.A.M.B.er that he thought vanity plates were gay, so technically, I guess I still dig chicks:D

I don't have any pairs of 1940 New York right now, but bear in mind if you do find a pair, check with the DMV to make sure the number isn't being used. If it is in use, even on a snowmobile, NYS won't let you use it.

A few years ago I bought a box of plates at the Sunday flea market, there were a few pairs of 39-40 New York plates in it. I moved them on eBay, no problem. There was one rusty one in the box from 1940, I think it only had the year stamped on it, I know there was no state spamping. It brought $140.00 on eBay............turned out to be a 1940 Alaska truck plate, nothing wrong with eBay.

I guess my initial post may have been misunderstood. I too have been on eBay for years with much success. I was just wondering if there was a member who may be in business selling plates, possibly with an inventory available for immediate purchase. I would obviously prefer to do business with someone from H.A.M.B..

At one time, I had upwards of 3500 NYS license plates. The only ones without the "World's Fair" logo for 1938, '39, & '40 I ever saw, were the non-passenger car plates (truck, taxi, dealer, etc.). You can register a car in NY with a non-car plate, but it looks kinda weird.

Not saying a passenger car plate without the logo NEVER got through the system, but in 30+ years of collecting NY plates, I've never seen any.

  15. Any luck with the contact I gave you?

In NY Even if you come up with one plate you can play around with your digital camera to make it look like two plates, shoot it twice put some dirt on it in one shot and clean in the other takes a little work. They only look at pictures to verifynthe plates. The only problem you could have is if you get caught driving with one plate. OOPS I guess it fell off ;) I'm not suggesting you break the law;)

I thought you had to bring both plates to the DMV at the time you wished to register the vehicle?

Nope, just a color photograph of both plates, the filled in form (MV-51 ??) and the check. Of course being New york, the only thing they REALLY give a shit about, is the check !!

Another New York plate story: About three years ago a barn was going to be torn down to make room for a swimming pool, and a friend thought he'd make some money on the old timbers. they turned out to be junk, but the neat part about the barn were the shingles. At some time in the 1930's the owner must have gone to the DMV and collected all the unissued plates. He took the time to nail them on in order, they were all rusted away, but still neat to see early recycling.

Heard back from Dave. Unfortunately he hasn't any 1940s in stock.

Any other on-line resources? No swap meets until Spring... :(

Keep checking E-bay single plates come around alot and if you follow the tips in the other posts you should have no problem. Just check the plate number before you buy it, you can do that on the nydmv site by using the personalized plate search to see if the number is taken.

I've got a 1906 New York "pre-state" in my collection. Back then (1903- June,1910) the state issued a number and a dashboard disk and the owner had to have his own plate made. The one I have was made from harness leather.

The oldest state-issued plate I have, is a 1910, issued in the late half of 1910. My collection consists of acomplete runs of NYS passenger & commercial plates, as well as the majority of bus, taxi, suburban, medical, etc. special issue plates.

Another hobby that got out of hand.......

Speaking of plates, did you guys see that news story recently where a guy in Georgia, I think, got randomly assigned a pair of plates with the combo of
HA8 JWZ. He was getting yelled at by people and didn't know why until he sounded it out. The state has added a number of number/letter combinations to its banned list.
