As I started this post, I thought I might share with you a place that I found that specializes in old tags as well as tags from around the world. Unlike a lot of merchants, he sells almost all states and sells sets of plates which was important to me. Excellent customer service and fast responses to e-mail.
After watching the last set of 1940 plates go for almost $140 on eBay, his prices seem reasonable. I have no affiliation whatsoever with this company but thought it might be of help to others. I also want to thank all those who sent me PMs with leads and offers of help in finding plates. js

I would like to find an Oklahoma plate, from 1956 starting the numbers '32'.

In those years oklahoma tags denoted the county issued by the county number, mine is Rogers county and was 32. Just think it would look cool on my 56 Dodge PU.

Arizona is the only state to make license plates out of copper. Copper was used in 1932, 1933, and 1934..BIG BUCK$$$

I was told by a buddy today that this has to be done by mail.
I thought I could do this in person at the DMV. Bring the photos, the new registration papers and of course a check, and walk out with a regi using the 1940 plates? Anyone in NYS do this in person?

it has to mailed in,no walk-ins on the old plates.it works best with a polaroid pic as the digital is real clear.i have used vintage plates on my bike and truck.the nys dmv website has all the info you need.

Thanks for the info. Got to figure out how to do it as I just purchased the car and have not registered it yet, nor paid tax on it. I will call DMV on Monday. I would like to do it in one shot. Again, thanks for the help. js

you should go down and register the car first, which you have to do anyway.mail all the stuff out right after.it takes a little while for the stuff to come back.also make sure your insurance is for a historical.thats the only way they(nys dmv)let it go.

So I guess I have to pay for a set of new modern plates that I will use only until I get the paperwork back from the DMV allowing me to use the old plates. Thanks.

i just went through this last summer with my stude . i went in and registered it and got all of the paperwork i needed to put old plates on it . i then had to mail the pic of the plate ( in 1947 NY only issued 1 plate for the rear of the car) . i did have to pay for a set of plates that i never used but it was worth it to me . i recieved a non transferable reg with the new plate number and the vintage plate number on it(both plate numbers) i then recieved a transferable registration and a new window reg sticker with just the vintage number on it. a bit of a hassle but all of this only took a few weeks and i drove the truck with just the old plate and copies of the paperwork the whole time from day one. illegal i'm sure but not a big deal . you will need the word "historical" on the insurance card .and i keep a copy of the info i found stating that NY only issued 1 plate during the war years
