The shop i worked at built a couple cars that we ran on the streets late at night in Socal-- particularly Compton/Carson area in the industrial areas off the 91 freeway (like Wilmington between 110 and 710.) All our stuff was turbocharged (VW, RX7, Ford, Chevy.) Some of the races were going pretty high dollar back then (drug dealer customers had the $$$.)

This was around the times of late 80's - early 90's. This was before the rice rocket bullshit.. Lot's of mid-80's Mustang 5.0's though... I had a 12 second normally aspirated VW back then that did pretty well. I always loved the dudes that were totally stealth though...

    Those were good times.

I remember when Big Willie came out to Van Nuys with his wife Tomika and her 68' Cuda. I tried to talk him into a race but he said he didn't race his wife's car. I offered car lengths and told him I'd race anything with wheels. I just couldn't get him to race. After that, everyone just shined him on.........Never saw him after that.

North Glebe Road in Arlington, VA used to be real popular in the mid to late 1980s.....you could turn 100 before the shutdown got messy.

It lasted a few years then the police squashed it. In the beginning they'd just make folks disperse.....then they started towing cars.

Great thread and stories ! Anybody remember the good looking chick with the red and white 55 Chevy around Sun valley in the 80's , with the license frame that said : " If you beat me , you can eat me " Sorry if she's now your wife (or Mom) . To my 13 year old mind in 83 that was hot stuff .

The racing in my area used to be badass, too many loser imports with bad attitude drivers pretty much ruined it for us. We still get runs off here and there. Here are some pics of my street raced rides. 90 Mustang LX, looked and sounded stone stock, went low 13's. Beat on that for about 5 years. 81 Malibu stocker 350 with a 125 shot and 3.73 gears. went 13.0's as well. My 67 Chevelle which can be seen on the street in Philly occasionally and Delaware most of the time. Enjoy the pics

  10. If you knew the right people to ask you could find it anywhere. This is in the country of Panama in the mid 80's, amazingly a lot of people and cars showed up at these.

I recently raced my 39 Ford truck (daily driver for 16 years) against a new Mustang that consistantly runs exactly 14 seconds at the Baton Rouge dragstrip

In 65-66 I ran a 57 Ford custom 300 with a factory light weight dual quad 427 & aluminum T-10 4 speed, Ballenger Bros headers & 456 gears in the Miami Fla area. Pretty bad in its day slow rolling on street tires. In 63 I ran a 2650 lb 57 Vette hardtop with a brand new in the crate 327/365 and a 4 speed with 456 gears. What a total piece of shit was for only 5 years old. I recall speed shifting the original 283/220 3 speed and running over gears. Split the case in half like an egg

Wow! Thanks for the memories Groucho! I don't think any of us even owned a camera, back in those days.. Bottle Bob was the heavy hitter, and Pops racer/Fastang were making money, out in the valley. The last street race I attended was just off Hubbard st. on the still under construction 210 frwy. I miss Tiny Naylors, and Bobs Van Nuys... We need a Bof A reunion.and an In-n-out burger....Those were GREAT times.. I am lucky to have lived through it...

Yep! O/T on this thread, grudge night at Epping strip, up in the other lane rumbles Golddigger, lookin' better than new. The lights drop and he spots me one second, I'm rowing the muncie for all she's worth, '31 w/SBC 327 w/2-4bbls. One glance in the rear view mirror says he's coming on at the traps, finished, I back off as he soars by at 130+. The old coupe did just fine that night. ;)

Hey guys "williesdaytona" is the real deal. I met him at the Hot Rod Reunion in Bowling Green a few years back. As we were saying good bye he said '' Tell Scott L. I said hi". Well later on talking to StLouisGasser , I asked him how Willies Daytona knew that we knew scott? " I dont know , maybe just figured since were from St. Louis." Well about a year went by and I was talkin about this and mentioned Willies Daytonas real name. And the stories started to flow. Well then we realized his connection with Scott L. Both of these guys are BIG street racers. Also my friend Biggen got his ass beat by this white car in 2000 in Detroit or Memphis I cant remember. So biggen helped with that $ total. Nice livin WilliesDaytona (JF) welcome to the HAMB. KING
Edit; Ha, Ha just went back and started reading the pages I skipped donin the quote and see Biggen posted his story.

Any SoCal guys remember the mustard yellow Vega with the single 4 barrel tunnel ram that ran on G78 Caldwells. Guys name was Boyd. I believe he came from Orange County. Man, that car was fast. I ran into him at Irwindale running brackets. He dialed in a 12.0. I asked him how he got the car to slow down. He said he disconnected the secondaries.

One day he shows up in a 66-67 Chevy II. A real beater type car. He chooses off a 69' Big Block Chevelle. The Chevelle asks to see the engine. Boyd pops the hood and theres a greasey, grimey sbc with cast iron intake, 2 barrel and ram horns exhaust. Boyd wants to go heads up. The kid in the Chevelle asks his buddys to look at the car. They can't believe he wants heads up. The kids gets scared and backs down. I cracked up and asked Boyd what it was. It was an LT-1 shortblock, ported 2.02 heads, intake off of a 400, ported with a 500 cfm 2 barrel. Rams Horns were ported and he was running 4:10 gears on recapped Caldwells.

  24. I don't remember the license frame. But, the license was RHOOONDA (Rhonda). She was the girlfriend of a guy I knew. Really cute

  25. I saw my old Grumpy car for the 1st time in years today. I'd sure like it back

I think his name is Boyd Gaebel, I think he was from Whittier. I remember seeing an article in Hot Rod magazine on his Nova.

Ran only a few times in my 74 nova.Wouldn't call it a street racer really was just a warmed over 350 with some extras but we did it in a industrial area were there were no side streets one way in and one way out.

  28. It was the early 80's. I had a hideous Avacado green 71 RS Camaro. Built small block. Used to race in the industrial areas of Thousand Oaks and WEstlake Village where the only thing we could kill was ourselves. Everything was hunky dory til I got caught with my pedal to the medal one night. Got a "contest of speed" ticket for racing a 68 Chevelle. It was a decade before I was able to get full coverage insurance again. Boy did that suck. You might say that cut off my right foot's balls. I bought a 64 chevy van, put an eight-track tape player in it with amp/graphic equalizer in it and a big ass pair of home speakers in it and became a spectator. Saw some crazy shit, tho.
Cruisin' Van Nuys Blvd was the shit. But we already had that thread. :)

  29. Almost forgot Tapo street in Simi Valley.
