I am not sure what branch of the military grandpa was in, perhaps Airforce as that is the direction my dad and one of my uncles took. I think that those pictures were taken in North Carolina but can not be 100% sure and sadly cant ask grandpa as he is no longer with us. Grandma and grandpa lived in Kenton Ohio, where my dad grew up and my mom and dad met. Small town, blink and you miss type of place.

Some bathing beauties and my granpas brother on the left, not sure who they ladies are. Friends of grandma and grandpa most likely.

Not an attempt at self promotion or to clutter up a thread of cool old photos, but an answer to hot-rod roadsters' request to post some pictures of my wagon. I shot the paint in the driveway and did all the work with the exception of the exhaust and covering the front and back seats with fabric. Everything else was done at home, in the garage you see.

Garvinzoom, with the mangled Curtis Electric 4 blade prop, tricycle gear and 'cigar tube' forward fuselage, I'm gonna guess Martin B-26 Marauder (insert derisive nickname here). That and the uniform appears to be Army, (to my untrained eye anyway) so I'm gonna say Army air force. I would say the plane came in gear up, with the power on. R-2800's are a tough beast, probably slung a new prop, on the same engine:eek:.

    Neat pics, one and all.

garvinzoom, it looks like in the one pic your grandpa is wearing a marine staff sergeant patch, but the other uniform pic you showed isnt a marine uniform. at least nothing on it resembles current marine uniforms. i looked up some merchant marine info and maybe thats it? i know its not air force, but ya got me! great pics nonetheless!

    garvinzoom,
I'm pretty sure the overseas shot is the cathedral in Florence, Italy.

Glad I could be of help.

I work for an airline as a Maintenance Inspector (Quality Control). We have (to the best of my knowledge) the largest fleet of Douglas DC-6s and definitely the largest fleet of Curtis C-46's still flying. I have seen those engines abused beyond belief, and keep running. We had an aircraft jump it's chocks and mow down an air stair (that shouldn't have been there) it kept going like nothing was there (the airplane looked like the flack damage shots of from the battle of Britain though:eek: it even caught a piece of shrapnel in a hydraulic line so it was even bleeding, red too). The 2800 was quite a bit further developed at the end of the war, the military engines at the time were the equivalent to a Civilian 'E' series. The highest the airlines bought into was the "C" series (with the "CB" being more common). It was cheaper, and you could buy military surplus parts for spares (we still use some:) the military sure knew how to preserve stuff).
