The 60's 302 will be a 10" clutch and the T5 would've had a 10.5". Not really a big deal, just slightly less holding power. They are both 10 spline so thats no big deal. The only thing he will need is a bell from a T5 car. The bell is something like an inch or so deeper to account for the T5's slightly longer input shaft. I would also change pilot bearing in case the ID's are different. Other than that, should be a cake walk.
The clutch and flywheel off of which engine? The flywheel off the old 302 will need to be used because of balance issues. A quick search on the internet produced this: Clutch and Flywheel - If your car is already a manual, simply use the existing clutch, flywheel, and throwout bearing. You should change the pilot bushing to the late model Mustang pilot bearing. Since you will need to remove the clutch and flywheel to install the T5 blockplate, you may as well take the opportunity to install a fresh clutch. Correct. '94-95 is .67" longer input shaft, most of the length is at the pilot end & can be cut down for use in pre-94 vehicles. But the T5 is longer than the early toploader by about the same again - 3/4" or so. I think that's where this topic is headed...
If you use the late bellhousing you will also have to convert to the cable clutch. I have seen adaptors that will space the T-5 back for the extra lenght and adapt it to your stock bellhousing so you can retain your stock clutch linkage. It's been a few few years since I looked into this and at that time Delta Bay Mustang in Brentwood California had them. Hope this helps.
Will all this apply for my 351 Winsor as well? What could I expect to pay for a T-5?In my '56 Ford would I need the shift forward tail shaft?
Windsor is a bit different. Small small fords came with usually a 157T flywheel, which fits physically inside the T5 bell. However, the 351's came usually with a 164T flywheel which is physically larger and won't fit inside the T5 bell. I'm not sure, but I can't see any reason why a 157T flywheel won;t work on a 351. And of course, watch your different balances.
I'm running what I believe to be a 157T flywheel on my stroker 351W using a late-model Mustang bellhousing & T5...it was custom balanced for the stroker though...
OK - I'm not 100% positive, but I'm pretty sure I used Ford Motorsports p/n M-6375-B302 which is listed as 157T & 50oz (like I said, I had it rebalanced because it was a custom stroker rotating ***y anyway). Motorsports catalog has a few different flywheels - as long as the clutch disk matches the input shaft splines & clears the flywheel bolts, that's really all that matters...in other words, you may be able to use your '60s pressure plate, just use a new clutch disk.
Why more teeth,is it larger in diameter?I want to put a T-5 in my '56 Ford with a 351W.The clutch is a new 11" and I want to use it with the regular linkage.Anyone know where I can find an adapter ?
You'll need 157 tooth flywheel, I believe early 302 had 28 oz balance like a 351W. 93 down T5 302 bell housing. Someone makes an adaptor for the manual clutch linkage and the old style fork to the t5 bell, I have them on my Comet but don't know the manufacturer as they came on the car when I bought it.
Here's the stuff for using the early clutch linkage with the late model bellhousing. For years 64 1/2 to early 67 http://www.calponycars.com/prodDetail.php?prodId=350 For years mid 67 to 70 http://www.calponycars.com/prodDetail.php?prodId=351
That is what I have in the bell housing. There is a piece that bolts to the side of the bellhousing to mount the ball the clutch bell crank swings on also.
