Roo man - Big Jim is more 60-ish than 80, don't you think?

His RE F/C is the only one in history to win an NHRA meet I think? That is indeed one hell of an accomplishment!

As a kid I can recall standing in the Hurst driveway watching Fred fire this thing up in the 2 car garage behind his house. I was hooked.

    Jimmy,
I checked and Jim is actually 73 or 74 years old. It just seems that he is 80 'cos he is so grouchy. I have know him since the late 70's when he toured Australia with the Dunn and Velasco Satellite. At the time I asked him about the Velasco deal after so many years with Joe Reath and he said that Joe had pissed him off so he put Henry's name on the car. He and Henry were partners in one of Jim's early rides, the Dunn, Merritt and Velasco Fiat altered.

Always loved his cars! Fred and Big John were in a class of their own. Any idea what Fred's up to these days?

Roo - gotcha. Amazing that a guy that age can do the whole NHRA tour with a modern nitro car. They are labor intensive, to say the least, and the rigors of that traveling circus year after year would be physically and emotionally grueling on anybody. That nitro stuff sure gets in people's blood!

More great photos from the distant not too distant past.Heres a couple from WSID's nostalgia meet start of the month. The F111 shot is something that Willowbank Raceway puts on to make the fuellers sound a bit quieter, does its dump and burn right after this and gives everyone a bit of heat.Keep on roddin'

  26. This is stupid! This is a drag car like a Shriner's parade car is a sportscar.

    Someone had to say it.

    C. Phil - good analogizing, there. However, I think it should be judged in the context of the TV Show that spawned it, to be fair. (Hopefully we will never see a HAMB Thread: "Allright, lets see all your shriner parade car pics". I'd rather be in the Manson family than to have to drive around in a parade in those things!)

And continuing in the fairness vein, four wheels off the ground and M&H slicks do atone somewhat.

Royalshifter - keep the pics coming. Very awesome images, especially because I've never seen most of them before! Last FED was probably a legs under car?

I thought this was kinda cool. I took the first picture. While searching the web I found a picture that was taken at the exact same instant from the other side with me in the picture taking my picture.

Here are some pics of a real cool Willys pickup that is the quickest and the fastest at every nostalgia event that I go to. I talked to the guy a few times and he really seems to be a real nice guy.
