Not only is the price too high for really ordinary looking gauges but his whole speil can only be described as "unfriendly" .
That's insane. If I had all the money I could ever need, I still wouldn't buy those. Too plain, too much money.
I think it's crazy price. They are not even the long tail pointer guages and the vacuum is really a motor minder which go for 2 to 3 hundred dollars in mint shape. The short pointer guages have a thinner bezel than the long tails to. I hope the fuel and amp guages have the thinner bezels also. i bet they don't. Gee I wonder how much the winner would give me for my speedo and tach?
Here is a vacumm guage http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Stew...005QQitemZ150193242811QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW Motor minder http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/VINT...019QQitemZ290194796522QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW
Crazy, yes, but no different than anything else traditional now. If you were away for several years from the marketplace, like I was, during when everything traditional- from rat to period-perfect hi-buck- came into vogue, you wouldn't believe the sticker shock. With apologies to Barbara Mandrell, a lot of people on this board were traditional when traditional wasn't cool. So, how'ya like the price of cool?
Go to the father's day roadster show. This is the market place now for certain items. I agree it is way out of line, but if you need them for that period car you have to have them. The is nothing worse to me then seeing a perfect car with new S/W winged guages. That to me is like fumbling in the super bowl on the goal line. For a lot of us it is about the details. You don't find these types of items anymore at the swaps. We may not like it but for alot of items this is a big dollar game now and e-bay has taken over. I don't blame e-bay or the people selling thier stuff. Supply and demand! Just my two cents. Steve Glucoft Amocat Speed Emp.
Well put. Still, there are some ways around, particularly in details. Creativity is still a basis of traditional rods. I'm frenching some mid-30's something bullet shaped headlights to go on the coupe. They're lots bigger than E&J's, but I think mine will look better on a full-fendered rod anyway. But you're right, sometimes you are just going to have to bite the bullet.
About 1940 to 1960. All youse guys who say they are "plain" are just jealous. I think the seller is a HAMBer.
Plain????!!!! Probably too much money was paid for those gauges, but they brought what they brought at auction. That established "fair market value". If you gotta have 'em, and you gotta have 'em right now, then you just gotta be willing to pay more than the other bidders. These are the so-called "industrial" gauges, the most sought after S&W line of gauges. Maybe the original "wings" line is more sought after, but only those needing period correct gauges for a pre-1955 build are looking for them, so I think that the market is smaller for the "wings" gauges. This grouping included the industrial fuel gauge, which is probably the most sought after of all S&W gauges. I'm sure that is one reason the grouping went so high. The auction didn't give enough information, though, to make a really informed decision about them. No size info given (2 1/4" vs. 2 5/8"). No date code info given. Both of these factors affect value. The only date code that I can see in the photos appears to be for 1957. If they were all date coded for 1957, that would definitely add to the value. Also adding to the value is the fact that they are represented to be "near mint, and in perfect working condition".
I belive (and don't quote me ) that the cresent needle gauges were 30's and 40's. I have a friend Terry who restores and sells gauges like this. He has been getting money like this for years. Like others have said, if you build want a period perfect car, and you have the $$$, you have to have the right stuff, meaning you will have a lot of money into it. Iron buyers right, nothing looks worse than a bitchin period car, with new PLASTIC gauges in it!!
But after you get all those cool guages and think the bleeding is over. Have fun trying to find one of these and pony up for it, so you can get the tach to work:
Splain it to me Myke. I don't know the difference in the short vs. long tail pointers. And what period are you talking about that these would not be correct for? Appears to my eyes that the one date code shown was Sept. 1957. I've still got lots to learn about S&W gauges.
