The reason that I resort to name calling and cussing is simple,, all the facts and figures have been provided for you in simple laymans terms and yet you still don't believe or care that seatbelts save lives. Its obvious to me that intelligent banter has no effect on you.

Check this out,, seems to fit you just fine!!

I did this in the merc by using u bolts with 2" washers on both sides, the clips on the new car seats hook right on the u bolts perfect, just take the car seat strap with you and make sure it can clip on the bolt before you buy it. Another trick with this is, a ratchet strap, you can store it in the trunk or glovebox, and it will hook to the hidden u bolts easily, ckeck the rating on the strap, and that seat aint going nowhere.

Well, I won't be drawn into a name calling contest with you, but I will say that from where I sit, this applys better to you. You are the one refusing to look at evidence to the contrary of your hysterical position. Where are these simple facts and figures that have been presented that you reference? As far as I recall without rereading this whole thread, the only facts and figures that have been presented here about seat belts saving lives are those from the NHTSA link. And as already stated, those are statistically even, showing only a 12% higher survival rate when seat belts are worn, and that is without even taking the statistical margin of error into consideration.

And to state that "you still don't believe or care that seatbelts save lives" is to completely ignore what I've already written. In my very first sentence I stated that I usually wear my seatbelts, when they are factory installed. And, I have stated that it is up to the individual to make their own informed decision about installing a restraint system in their own car. My personal decision is that only an expert can design a restraint system that will not potentially do more harm that good (and even the the experts do not always get it right). Although I've researched the subject more than most people, I've gone out of my way to say that I am NOT an expert, which is why I will NOT install a restraint system in a car that did not come equipped with one. But, I do not pretend to say that is the right answer. Again as I have stated, it is a complex issue. You need to stop seeing just what you want to see and actually read what has been written.

    Sheer hysteria.

As a "professional" drag race car builder, I have seen poorly designed seat belt systems save lives, home built crap installed with soft grade eye bolts and a couple flat washers included.

I have installed many sets of seat belts and mounts. The idea that bouncing off an unpadded dash, steering column, rear view mirror, or anything else in the car for that matter is much less appealing than an improperly installed seat belt.

Watching my friend and customer slam his race car head on into the wall at well over 150 mph and walking away, may have increased my confidence a little.. I know for a fact he would not have survived without them.

Take a look around in your hot rod,, see just how many surfaces there are in it that you feel safe bouncing off of. There aren't any.

I am done with this, anyone who thinks that they are safer without the seatbelt is a jackass.

I think I'll let them read the post and maybe the parents can comment here. I don't think my wife realized we went around the block but I mentioned something about giving him a ride on the tractor (feeling her out) and she said 'I was thinking of doing that too'.

I love this thread, I buy no means am an engineer ,but I have had my experience with and with out seat belts. I got in a wreck on the freeway here in Phoenix in rush hour in my 65 ford pick up. My face slammed my steering wheel and my buddy's head broke the windshield, that suck, all of this because I thought old cars shouldn't have seat belts. In my 50 Plymouth I put in 2 sets of seat belts, for the family and no more than a week later I had to slam on the brakes and swerve to miss a drunk driver, and no one was thrown around the car ,I am no engineer, but I agree with the lot of you some seat belts are better than none:cool:

I've had my head take out a windshield.
I've also had my head hang out the passenger side of a truck that almost rolled. I was the driver.

I don't know if seat belts save lives, but I do know they keep your rear planted in the driver's seat when things get hairy.

I was driving my 8 yr old daughter to the local mx track to do some riding, and she insisted on wearing her helmet while riding in the truck. With all of the steel in the cab of my 52 i suppose that wasn't a bad idea. Now i wonder when the govt will mandate all passengers(not the driver) should wear helmets? Should i make my kids wear DOT helmets when riding in any of my vehicles? I am sure it has to be some percentage safer than no helmets at all. Better yet, why not have all pasengers wear helmets, and make more new "nanny state" laws to protect us from ourselves......

  11. Uh oh, it looks like the popular "slippery slope" argument has been brought up. "If you allow the man to take away one of your freedoms, he'll take em all. First it'll be seatbelts, then helmets, then a full suit of armor!"

    Ha Ha Happy New Year!

    Agree 100%.

It's one time on a quiet street at slow speeds. He didn't drive down the highway at breakneck speeds. I wouldn't make a habit of it, but if you plan to take him for rides in the future, You probably should put in belts.

what type of seat belts do those of you who use them install? As far as taking them from junk cars (make, model) etc.......?

I have a 54 chevy pickup that i want to install some in. I dont think I would be able to live with myself if I put my girl through the windshield.

What are these "seatbelts" that you speak of?

  16. I wouldn't bother with junkyard seatbelts. I got mine from Juliano's. They sell a nice kit, and I believe they now have the chrome buckle style available as shoulder belts. BOB JULIANO is on here. Juliano's should be a H.A.M.B. Alliance Vendor.

    Thanks,
    Kurt

  17. There was a cool story on one of those late 70's reality shows, "That's Incredible!" or "Real People". A guy had invented seats that had rails which allowed the seat to go forward and up some in a collision (half a parabola, or a log function). This kept the driver in the seat (in a head-on) and lessened the forces on the (human) body. He had a stationwagon with these seats and no seatbelts and crashed it into a barrier to demonstrate it. It was interesting. Anyone remember that one? How about Wrong Way Wooten?

    Thanks,

Wow, is it time for the seatbelt thread already this year? How time flies.

To those that refuse to wear seat belts, please do not start now. We will not miss you.

My problem is that that joyriding with a 7 month old infant on your lap is more selfish than smart. Like a 7 month old could know to enjoy it.

And I was planning on being nicer this year. Damn.

Please do not bring the incident up with your daughter. It will just cause strife and not change what was done. Just know if your head you won't take him out again till you can install the proper restraints.

Also, I'd give some serious thought about riding a child around on a tractor or riding lawn mower. They have one seat for a reason. Accidents do happen and I've seen/heard of what can happen when a child accidentually slips off your lap. Why not caution on the safe side? Could you really live with yourself if your grandchild got a limb or worse caught up in the tractor? The thought make me shutter.:(

  20. However, If you are old enough and smart enough to obtain a license and operate a vehicle then you are old enough and smart enough to make that decision for yourself.

What does intelligence have to do with it? I've known some pretty stupid people who were still able to get their licence without any trouble! It's scary to think about what kinds of morons are driving around out there!

How many 16 year olds do you know that are wise (different than smart) enough to know that it's a good idea to wear seat belts if the vehicle has them? I don't know a single one and I can't think of one either.

My 34' Ford pickup has the stock gas tank under the seat. I really don't want to be straped to it in a rollover:eek:. I think I'll take my chances with a bailout
Years ago I rolled a 52 Olds. If I hadn't dove under the dash I would have been killed.
I wear a seatbelt every time in my late model driver so, I'm not against them. I do believe that some of the laws are bullshit just to generate revenue. You can't tell me that there is not a huge amount of money made with seatbelt laws. Personally, I go with the "anti government" group. I really don't need the government to help me save me from myself. I recently saw a push to outlaw smokjing in your car.

I wouldn't be without seat belts in any of my old cars. They're too cheap to leave out.

  24. I've been wondering how the people that say stuff like "I don't need no gubbermint laws to protect me from myself" respond to the comment brought up several times that a seatbelt will help you stay in the driver's seat to help control the car? Any laws apply while driving on public roads. And, and, and, why does a seatbelt thread turn into a discussion about the gubbermint, anyway?

    Thanks,
    Kurt

  25. There are new laws that'll take effect in June in CA (don't start) against smoking in a car with children, and using a cell phone while driving (except hands-free).

    Thanks,

For all the people who are SO AGAINST wearing seatbelts, I thank you. When you and all of your loved ones die in a minor accident in your old car, that is more air for me to breathe and more parts for me to get off your wrecked car at the salvage yard.

    Keep 'em unbuckled!

I took my 13 day old son for a ride on my 1946 Harley.
Hand clutch, hold the kid and work the throttle
