Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by jess, Dec 24, 2007.

  1. You can't just leave us hanging like this, so uncool. Nice work so far.

  2. Very very cool. Keep it coming. You're very fortunate to be able to do something with your dad.

  3. Great build. What x-member did you folks use in the frame? Was it bought from a supplier of homemade? Looks good

  5. Wow! Great story, great progress pics.
Denise, look out...you may have some competition.:D
Maybee so much of our hot rod history would'nt be so foggy if there were more women chronicling what went on back in the day.
I hope I get lucky enough to have one of my 3 girls be half as pasionate about cars as the women HAMBers I've met.

    Very cool post...
I've been wanting to know how the soft tops were done.
    Thanks

  7. Since you guys are putting the top in,I guess it's gonna stay primer?
Really looks like you guys are having a fun time! Looks great Jess

  8. Oh man...this is killin me! I'm only a few miles away and can't start on my 34 5 window coupe 'till I have more ducks in a row...like selling my 40 chevy coupe first to free up my garage.
I'd LOVE to see this car! This is what mine looks like right now.

I did a 68 firebird with my daugher, it was her first car. The car is great we still have it. Started it when she was 15, finished when she was 18. She is 23 now, married and when her and her husband get home from military service they will drive it. The best part is the time we spent together, during the build, going to junk yards car shows, won lots of tropies. Seeing this tread brings it all back, a wonderful time for us. Guys let your daugher pick her first car to build... I told my daughter the only prerequisite was that it had to have round headights!!

PS her husband is a really awesome guy, he loves my daughter, and loves the bird, what more could I asked!!

On the very first car I rebuilt I did the top the same way,and it was my mother who showed me how!!.Including how to sound out the tension in the top fabric. I used vynyl as it was 1969 and the original type of roof cloth was no longer obtainable.
In fact it was mum who made up the interior hood lining too...LOL!
The edging was fairly easy and in those days you could still by the 'top dressing' for painting on the top to preserve it from the weather.
I like the look of the fabric insert better than filled tops,it speaks loud and clear of the era ...in my mind anyway.
You and your dad may want to come to Lake Gairdner one day and race ....:)

I know Jess wants to end up with a satin black finish, so they will be taping off the insert when they do the paint.
They had a chance for the upholstery guy to come and do the top, and jumped at it..... didn't know if it would fit in to his schedule later on.

Primer for at least another year. We've got to work the bugs out and drive it around some. Even when we paint it, I can't envision a gloss finish. I like the satin look. We've talked about a black primer with a hardener in it.

That primer grey has grown on me though. Thanks!

That's great! I bet she'll remember that time she spent with her dad forever. I'm so blessed to be able to work so closely with my dad on such a unique project.

  20. Hey Jess, thanks for this great thread. I will save it for my little guy when he gets a little older. He is only 1 year old [New Year`s baby] and I bought him a 31 coupe, chopped, and in satin paint. No fenders, motor or drivetrain with it. That will be up to me and him someday.
This thread will be an inspiration to him and teach him the values that our parents give to us during our short stay on this planet.Congratulations and hats off to Dad and friends......Well done....Time-Bomb John or visit

    Jess,
Thanks so much for sharing the update on your progress. Harry looks like he really knows what he's doing. And who would have thought to tear it so it isn't stepped? Genius! I've always wondered how some tops came out perfect and others very wrong, here is the answer!
Good on you Malcolm for helping out. It is always more fun when you have a hand from a friend! :)

Would like to hear how this last step is done.
Wondering what the metal railing is ? If it's part of the roof, or added ?

    Thanks again for the info.
