SO i'm gusseing i'm not the first to realize the sheer enjoyment and
wtf!!! feeling of tearing apart my first old olds and thrying to get the trans off before the motors free!!!!

i want to find the designer give him a big hug for a good set up. and then slap him silly for the trans motor attaching !!!

is there any other way to do it if two weeks of
    cola
    wd40
    tans fluid
    gas
    acetone
    wax
just about every thing else on the net.
i finally broke the pistons out that were stuck.
then removed the THIRTY THOUSAND BOLTS.

if these weren't such cool motors i'd be pissed.
instead i had a beer and laughed. it turned in to a your not gonna beat me moment.

what if any is the best way?

uhhh unbolt the bellhousing and slide it off......

    mine did

just don't drop the hydro on yer foot!

  3. Ref RevKev6 Doesn't work that way on the early ones, gotta remove 32 bolts from the torus cover to flywheel to remove trans. It all formed what they call converters today.

I dont know if its the best way, but this worked for me. I ended up pulling the heads off. I had alot of rust and **** in the #1 cylinder and soaked it with gibbs peneterating oil. I honed it up to the piston and cleaned it up best i could. I tried moving the crank pulley and couldnt get it to budge. I let it sit for a month or so and still couldn't get it to move off the crank pulley, then I tried getting at the teeth on the flywheell with a prybar and got it to break free, and yes there were alot of bolts.

I struggled the same way. Turned that whole mess upside down, went rod to rod cap, taking em all off, and beating the pinstons up into the cyls. Once the crank was free it was onto removing (breaking) the 28 (I believe) bolts.

    What a chore.

how early?? mine was a 54?

  7. Diesel works best, along with penetrating oil like Gibbs, Kroil, and even MMO.

Unless it was completely fubar, diesel and penetrating oil has always worked for me. Otherwise, I usually just turn the block over and melt the pistons out with a torch.

I remember the same thing, there is something stopping the trans from coming off.

just a foggy memory but is there a c clip on the center of the torus keeping the trans attatched until the engine is out of the way? you cant get to it until its removed. i remember something like that, but i know i had the bolts off and it wouldnt come apart.

    mines a 56

and yeah if you can't turn the motor you cant get to the bolts.

next time i'll try the torch, be way faster.

i read the olds tech thread and i think 371 pistons will clean up the cycls.
i'll try the worst .one first.

if the pistons haven't actually bonded to the cylinder walls
and you haven't torn it all down yet,
you can go a long way towards breaking it free by circulating the oil in the pan

I just picked up an early 394
the seller said it was stuck
I made an oil primer out of a spare distributor
and spun it for about a half hour
put a pry bar on the flywheel
    and got it to move
spun the primer for another half hour
and eventually was able to turn it over with the starter motor.

if it's totally froze solid I've seen guys bust or melt the pistons to pull the crank with torus attatched
