How man have sold a classic car to find out it was being shipped over seas?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by jmurphy, Jan 11, 2008.

  1. My brother sold a '70 Buick Riviera to a guy from Belgium. I was thinking how's that big boat of a car going to fit on those narrow European streets? A 455 Buick doesn't exactly get great gas mileage either.

  2. I wouldn't feel to bad about the Europeans getting them, but fuck the Asians. All they send us is shit(and we keep buying it! Shame on us.), why should we send them treasure in return?

I am sure he will be happy. It was a numbers matching Mopar with A/C. Those are even rare here. Hopefully I can hold on to the next car longer than 10 months. :)

How about the other way around ??? My Riv came out of SoCal in '06 When I was selling my '95 Fleetwood I had tons of calls from guys in the States. In the end a 18 year old kid from here in town bought it.......

Sold my chopped '54 Chevy driver project to a wheeler dealer out of LA that sends stuff to Japan. Later saw the finished pearl white car in a magazine "Hard Core Rod & Kustom". Wish I had kept that one.

My old 59 Invicta Wagon went to Sweden.

I think it's good when they go overseas. Then you don't see them around and wish you'd never sold.

In fact, I wish a few of my Ex's would go to Sweden too.

As we say in sweden, a cheap hobby isn't a real hobby ;)

I know tons of people over here who has imported their car from the states, also know a few guys who go over "there" to buy cars regulary and sell them here in sweden. The hotrod and kustom hobby just get bigger and bigger here.

I have future plans to buy a few cars myself in the states later, because in U.S you can buy the exact model you want. It isn't that easy (and cheap) to find the right model and object here in scandinavia (norway, sweden, finland) :)

It's a good thing. When I'm retired (probably by age 80) I would love to be on vacation in Europe and see an old hot rod (American) cruising around if not several. Are they not just as entitled to drive as us? Anyway, it creates a larger market as well, not a bad thing for all in the hobby.

I bought none of my cars overseas, all were already here .But nontheless they came from the US at one time.
My 34 Plymouth was first registered in Vienna in May 1954 and was imported to Austria from the US in 1953. I bought it in Vienna in 2004.
My 1956 Chevy Bel Air 2dr sedan was brought over from Houston , Texas in 1982.
I bought it in 2001 near Munich as a resto project.
My 1962 Impala Coupe came here in 1992 from Flagstaff, Arizona , rustfree very low milage car(14500miles), I got it cheap in 1997 because no one seemed to like early 60s cars over here back then.
The 1961 Bel Air 4door im building right now was a rustbucket / granny car from New Jersey, engine rusted/stuck, floors gone, came over in 1998.The guy how brought it to Germany lost his enthusiasm after tearing the car completely apart. After changing hands a couple of times I traded it for a good running 283 I had 800$ in.
Maybe not worth it but I couldn´t see it got to the crusher. I ordered about $5500 in parts from the US for the 61( that´s not finished yet), I don´t even want to think about what I have in the others. But fuckit, the fun I have with those cars is worth every penny.

I've never had a car over there, but I sell a lot of old car parts on the internet and have shipped countless packages to other countries. Europe and Australia seem to be the hot spots. I'm more than happy to send them what they want, if you read about the quality of some of the restorations in Finland, Norway, Germany, ect, it's really impressive.

I would think it'd go both ways too. Any German HAMBers out there who can get me a right hand outside mirror for a W115 Mercedes? They only came on RHD drive cars and I'd really like one for mine.

    NO!!!! You can't have "Baloo"!!
That would be like the "Glass Slipper" or "The Winged Express" being sold to Japan!!!

This is a good thread! I lived one school year in Seattle and bought some cars to bring back home. Pretty much each seller was super excited for selling an old American car to f**ing Finland where polar bears keep eating penquins and gas costs 10 bucks per gallon... :)

I like it how easy it is to place a car on a boat and put it out to sea for another country, yet, if I'd like to import a car it's pure hassle. I was thinking about importing a Mahindra Jeep CJ a few months ago, then looked into it, they have to be steam washed to keep them clean of foreign soil
Getting some vintage tin from Mexico would be a pain as well. And I wouldn't have to truck it, I'd go drive down, pay, and come up. But it's "importing"

I can check into that if you want. Would you prefer a new one or a used one?
    Is this what you´re lookin´for?

A friend of mine is a longshoreman at the Port Of Baltimore. He snaps pics of rods and kustoms daily just before he loads them in the container

That's exactly what I'm looking for! I'm not choosy, a nice used one would be fantastic. Mine only has a mirror on the left side door since it's left hand drive, so I'd really like one for the other side.

Shoot me a PM, I'd gladly buy one from you or I've got tons of stuff to trade if there's something for one of your cars that I could help you with.

Behold the power of the HAMB!

I´ve seen that one on ebay.de, but they seem to be on the pricey side...I´ll check my local wreckin yard on monday, they have lots of European car parts for cheap. Would be surprised if they didn´t have a righthand W115 mirror with your name on it :)

shipped my ramshackle looking 52 F1 from Sacramento to Scotland... looked terrible in the pics but at £700 was a real cheap truck this side of the atlantic.. got it home looked it over and found that there was barely a dent in the bed or cab.. and zero rust,, its now on the deck with a Ford EFI motor OD auto and 8.8 rear.. dont know why someone over there hadnt snapped it up It was on Ebay for $1500, my guess is that it was probably pricey in the USA for a 52 F1,, but good uns must be getting hard to find.. since purchase in September last year Ive sent a few grand to hot rod suppliers in the USA ... unfortunately some have returned me goods made in China..lol... you cant win em all..

I've just been paging through Germany's eBay and using an internet translator, and now I'm confused. Are German cars RHD? Or is that only in the UK?

Japanese ALWAYS use cash due to their antiquated and backward banking system.....and the novelty of carrying a gun of ANY description must have REALLY notched his beltful of "Amelica Fantasies"

Not to hijack too much or get too far off topic but what are the suffixes for ebay in Australia and the UK? All the help so far is appreciated, by the way.

  30. Two years ago sold my 60 El Camino to a guy from New Zealand. Last year sold my 59 El Camino to a guy from Sweden. I look at it this way, they were both real excited about the cars and I knew they would be appreciated by many people in their new home. Plus I had cash in hand........
