I have a 1961 Cadillac Fleetwood, and I want to build it into a Traditional 60s custom. Im looking for pics of types of wheels. I already have a couple of paint schems in mind. Although not Traditional im going to bag it and upgrade it to an alternator.

  2. Chrome reverse, or maybe painted steelies with spiders.

  3. Traditional '60s? Wire wheels.

My neighbor has a cool 61... ........:rolleyes:come over here away from the crowd...don't want to get you in trouble...this should be good enough. His is dark gray, has a nice looking set of 18" torque thrusts and a set of the white and gold strip tires...about 4 inches lower than stock...it really looks sweet. You better get back over to the crowd:cool: they look pretty rough

So do we all, on traditional FIFTIES cars, but this thread specified SIXTIES and the difference is blatantly in the different wheels and tires.
SIXTIES was all about skinny whitewalls and custom wheels without the sombreros!

I like wires too but I've seen too many of the after market ones break under the weight of a Caddy.

On the other hand, I think that '61 Caddy wheel disc is the prettiest sombrero ever made.

My favorite custom cadillac is Gene Winfield's 61 Caddy "Mabellene" it had a yellow and gold fade paint job that was really fine and featured wide whites and sombreros. You should check it out on the web,...I sport skinny whites on my 65 Riviera, but not all customs from the SIXTIES had this look.

I love traditional sixties kustoms. IMHO though, when building a kustom, you are a bit less limited with what you can do. I have a 64 Electra that I am re-painting right now. Below is a photo of when I bought it, I am re spraying it a true gold, not a factory "sand-beige". I am going to run wide whites, and Moon Turbines in the front, and Saturns in the back (it is skirted). It may not be a true "sixties kustom", but I think it has the right feel though. Sorry for the shitty picture! I love the Kustoms coming out of japan right now, so I posted some additional pics of examples. They both run wide whites, and I think they look fine. Skinny whites and wires look great too, But wides with wires, or a custom cap can be rad. Build what you want! Just don't put dubs on it!!!!:)

My Starliner is going with wide whites and chromies with chrome spiders. Skinny whites really didn't come in vogue until the mid-'60s. The theme build-year for my Starliner is 1960-61. Early '60s style.

there were still plenty of cars with wide whites in the sixties (especially early 60's)
personally, i dont like skinny whites,,never have,,,,if i had a car back then, i guess i would have been one of the guys that was just behind the times,,or maybe just not a "follower"...
kinda like the pastel color with painted bumpers, and heartbeat graphics fad in the 80's,,,NEVER got that whole concept..and sure as hell wouldn't do it just because everyone else did...

According to the R&C article on Larry Watson Larry did his first Lace paint job in 1966 on this 1964 Pontiac...
But I know for sure he already had thought about it in 1961... he just did not had time to do it then... So Kirk, yours still will be period perfect!!!

I'm not a fan of whites with mags either, but wide whites were on show kustoms well into the '60s. I have pretty much every car magazine produced from 1948 to 1970 and refer to them often. There were lots of cars with wide whites even into '65 and '66 in all of them. There was absolutely a transition to skinny whites as a trend during that time, but it definitely wasn't like everyone switched over the day skinny whites came out.

I'm not bashing you, just saying.

skinny whites came out around 62 but the big swicth to skinny was 65 those and red lines, and who remenbers wide ovals they all got big with the new muscle car craze but customs and a few rods had wide whites well into the60.s

  25. Yeah Teddy. The LOOK on Bellflower Blvd was Supremes with the Uniroyal Wide Ovals with the super skinny stripe that was way out at the edge to the tread. 'Bout '65/'66.

Does anyone make that tire today?
