I have been trying everywhere to match the paint on my 66 C10 dash. It has never been repainted and has been in our family since new. The paint charts all show a fawn...but a restoration pack from GM stated in 66 they used a dark fawn. I found a color code from 66 CARS that states dark fawn, but no dealer has been able to match it yet. Have any of you experienced this and found a match? By the way, I have used the Autocolorlibrary....they do not show it, although after several conversations, they at least admit there was a darker fawn. I'm hoping they will send me a color sample.
If you can't find a paint code then bring it to a paint supplier who has a color match gun, they will zap the color you have and mix up some paint to match.
Can you post a picture of the dash? I have a '61 Pontiac with what they called a 'light and dark fawn' interior; it's possible they used the same colors for subesquent years on other GM vehicles. If you look up 1961 Pontiac at autocolorlibrary.com, there are formula numbers for both light and dark fawn on the second and third page of the paint color chip page.
If you ignore the minor surface rust, here is the difference... the dash part is browner than it looks in the pic and it is very flat but has a light metallic to it.
Hey, Given the heat and cold temps. that interior has seen over the last 42 years, it's doubtful you'll find a dead-on match off a colour- chip. Remove the glove box door, an area normaly out of direct sunlight, and not subject to fading, and have a automotive paint supplier match it. Colour names, chips and formulas change a good bit over time, and may never have matched what was on your vehicle. Swankey Devils C.C.
Pimpin, I have tried that at a couple of places...they don't seem interested. Autobody supply stores are getting like parts stores...it's hard to find anyone over 25 behind the counter, and even harder finding one willing to help. They don't even seem to want to get their color books out and let you look thru them!
Keep looking for an old guy that mixes paint. As was suggested, take a piece that hasn't been in the sun. A friend just had paint mixed for a '65GM product, slight metallic and flattner.
Any color for your dash in 66 would have laquer, which is no longer available. So find you a jobber and go through his fleet color guide or a BASF jobbers color max. Then you will have to add some flattner to the color or clear. Shoot a test panel so you get the right amount of flattening. It can be done , don't give up. Don
Thanks guys, the encouragement is greatly appreciated (and needed). Seems like a guy can run into a lot of dead ends on some of these projects.
I have used a place in Michigan to match the interior color of my '67 Chevelle. I actually sent them my glove box door so they could match the flat color. I was very happy with the results. They mixed the paint and packaged it in aerosol cans. I would recommend them. Thirlby Automotive, 231 E. 8th St., Traverse City, Michigan 49684 I would call them 800 339-4478 or 231 947-8120 Ask for Randy in the paint department.
If you allow for color differences from the camera flash and computer monitor settings, it looks very close to the fawn color used in '61 Pontiacs like I suggested earlier. Here's a couple pictures; the car with the stick shift is my Bonneville, and the other is a picture of a 12k mile original Catalina I saw on eBay a while back.
Rpol, I'll giv ethem a try. Stuart, yes that does look very close....I'll check the numbers and see if they have a color chip for the Pontiac
Rpol, I emailed them last night but haven't heard back, I realize some businesses just don't do much email, so I may try to call them tomorrow.
Call around to the local automotive paint supply stores and see if they have a camera to match paint. Take the glove box door in and let them set their camera on it. They plug it into their computer and it will spit out a formula to match your paint.
My PPG lady will shoot a prophet and then make sure its perfect by hand. Never had a problem, just don't show up at 4.30.
Auto Color Library used to have it below is a link but it no longer works. Maybe could try emailing it to them. The image name is contained in the link below it is 1966-chevrolettruck-pg02.jpg If you can get them to send you this picture it should have the info you need. I'm sure they still have it somewhere the problem will be finding someone willing to look for it. Good luck if you find it let me know I could use that info myself I keep looking and see if I can find it somewhere. http://autocolorlibrary.com/cgi-bin/search/searchpic.pl?1966-chevrolettruck-pg02.jpg
Here's what I was able to find. I found these scans on the internet they are kind of shitty but maybe you can make out the numbers. The first 2 pictures are 1964 The next 2 pictures are 1965 The last 2 pictures are 1966 Here's my reading of the paint code numbers from the second 1966 page. The very bottom. INTERIOR PAINT CODES 1966 Chevrolet Trucks Color Name Ditzler Code DL Ivory 8318 Argent Silver DX 8568 Black 9000 Medium Fawn Poly 22151 Fawn Poly 22743 Charcoal Gray Poly 32189 Turquoise Poly 43276 Light Green 43523 Dark Green Poly 43822 Red 7074 Red Poly 71571 Hope it helps
My 66 "camper special" was a two tone dash as I recall. There was a darker color besides the fawn, almost a flat brown metallic. I don't recall the details on what pieces were which color... Maybe it's time to have a place scan your parts?
Guys, Thanks for all the help. I found a SEM color that was very close at a local store. They mixed it, put it in a can and I'm ready to try it this weekend! One of the HAMB members was from the same place I am, and he pointed me to a great shop. I used a 3097 Dk. Bronze metallic that I think is a corvette interior color.
