I found a NOS steering box for $75!This one has some kind of cap on top of the locking nut where mine has the adjusting screw.Anyone know if that is supposed to be pried off to get at the screw?
Also should I put gear oil or STP in it?

I put STP in my 56 f100 box 5 years ago and have had no leaks or problems yet. My buddy is an old hotrodder from the sixties,he has a original 32 roadster from Calif. with a 56 box and a brookville 32 roadster with a 56 box. the original car was purchased in 1959 and he said that he only uses STP in his boxes. So good enough for him me too !

I use STP in early Ford steering boxes, also in the Mustang nonpower box in my 32 ford.

If the cap is a hex cap,try unscrewing it.I had a 41 Plymouth that had one.Once you unscrewed it,the screw and locknut were visible. Just a shot in the dark...

sounds like the cap you refer to is the lock nut/ cap it should have the large star washer thing under it. if so unscrew it and adjusting screw is underneath.

Use the oil. Grease won't circulate, and it will wear a flat spot on the gears.
