I just recently ran into what I consider to be a rare opportunity. I got a fella wanting to trade a 1951 61 series two door hard top caddy. This car is in great shape. He claims it was restored in the mid 90's and the interior looks great too, however it has that old car smell to it. And friends its strong. So my question is, aside from tearing all the interior out is there something I could do to help eliminate some of this smell. Upfront Thanks for any help.
Dryer sheets under the seats ... wait a minute! Old car smell and stale gas is one of the most comforting odors I can think of!!! If nobody died in it, just drive it with the windows down! Once YOU live in it for a while, you'll be all set ... or you'll just get used to the smell. Fart a few times, eat a burger with onions, buy oranges from a Mexican on a freeway, pick up a cheap hooker at a truck stop, but for god's sake, don't let "old car smell" keep you from buying a 51 Caddy!
Rub a skunk on the upholstery. Or redo the interior. The smell will be most likely "INSIDE" the seats, carpet, door trim etc..
Try a product called Nilodor, it works great. I used when a customer (veterinarian) had a bag break in his car had horse placenta in it. It was rough, especially in the NC heat!
Plenty of baking soda in open containers and white vinegar in bowls left in there for a while. Some oxygenated cleaner will help too. Good luck! Horse placenta, huh? That'd be a hard one to live down.....
What the f was he doing with horse placenta in his car in a bag? I could see a cooler in the trunk or something, but I can't imagine it riding shotgun next to his cell and 1/2 pack of camels. My old elky stunk and all it took was a pot filled with sand and about 20 sticks of incense. Seal 'er up and let it soak in for a couple hours and you are golden. Just make sure the incense isn't placenta flavored.
I think just a driving the car with the windows down for a while and also place baking soda, will help get the odors down considerably. Car has probably sat closed up for a long time, a good airing out will do wonders. Sounds like a great find, buy it!
just roll the windows down and drive it to me here in tucson.I will keep it in the warm sunny weather for ya and after 10 years Im sure it will go away
Has i mention this caddy is a 61 series with power windows 331 motor auto tranny restored in the mid 90's purrs like a dream never wrecked no bondo. What do you think it is worth. He wants to trade for my chopper that is probably worth 15,000 and give me 4,000 cash
Put some charcoal in a tray under the seat permanently, a tray of cut apples overnight a few times, they absorb the odors... I once heard that you can use horse placenta to remove rust Escuse me while I corner the horse placenta market! Bwaaahahahaahaaahaaa haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa <cough> aaa.!
There are several products that will work I just got rid of fish juice smell out of my daily(its a long story) with a product called "Mark Oder" go to a janitorial supply and ask them for help there are also smoke bomb or fogger cans that work well too
first we will need to see a picture of the car to properly determine the appropriate course of action. Only then can we decide the fate of your interior... i cant wait until these computers are "scratch and sniff".
sprinkle a pound of coffee grounds and shut it up for a week..problem solved.but everytime your car passes starbucks it'll stall on ya.
Old car is one of my favourite smells. I'd buy it if you could get in a handy spray can for the house!
You'd better stock up on moniters.....wouldn't want to wear one out in the middle of a "session".......
I have been told charcoal works take a bag cut it open set it in the floor board over night .Good luck
Thats the best smell ever! It doesnt matter how long im away from my lincoln whenever i get it im reminded of the first time i brought it home. hopefully the smell never goes away.
I don't know why anyone would get rid of old car smell. The fogger cans work if you can stand the smell they put out, drier sheets work for light duty. I keep a small bag of coffee beans in mine.
