    Hey there, guys,

I hope I'm not duplicating someone else's thread but here goes:

I have a '49 Ford car ignition switch and a new key cylinder with keys--and I am trying (unsuccessfully, without a shop manual) to install the key cylinder.

But (lame joke goes here) I can't get the cylinder to insert all the way in the switch, and I can't get it to stay in. (That's what she said ... .)

Anyway, all jokes aside (please), does anyone know how to do this? I know it can't be that difficult; I'm just lame.

    Lemme know.

    Thanks.

  2. It inserts from the rear (lame joke here also). Line up lugs with slots in the panel, angled 1/8 turn, insert from behind and straighten. Then the bezel attaches from the front.

    Big A,

Thanks! But what I need to know is how to get the key cylinder to stay in the switch. Installing the switch should be easy.

    Anybody?

I would imagine with the key in it would be like anything where it will go in upside down or similar and turn a bunch till it locks in, then remove the key?

I could be talking outta my ass, I have a 51 tudor sitting in my driveway so Ill take a peek.

My info is from earlier Fords, but I believe yours uses the same Hurd cylinders? Most of these have a tiny protruding pin that locks cylinder in and of course prevents installation just as well. This pin can be depressed at a certain key position, generally about 45 degrees from vertical, to slide it in. Once it is in, there should be a hole in the mechanism allowing the pin to be depressed fro removal by again finding the magic key position and sticking a probe into the hole to depress pin.

GOTO A local locksmith that does auto locks.
There is a small pin at the top front or rear of the lock cyl. turn the key counterclockwise to about 10 oclock, press pin to flush. slide into switch assembly turn clock wise ti start . lock should stay in switch
