    Greetings.
I was awakened early Saturday morning by a call from the Brooklyn Center, Minnesota police. The had found my stripped car in an alleyway in north Minneapolis. I have several cars, one of which is a forty Ford PU, but I also have (had) a 1973 red El Camino with a 383 stroker motor and a 700 R4 ******. Some low down son of ***** stole her from my father's heated underground (security?) parking area, where I kept it over the winter months. They popped the steering lock and drove her off. She was mint. She had 16x8 Torque Thrust D's wheels and Kumho tires. The wheels have a grey center and satin rim. The motor has a 770 Demon carb and a hi rise Edelbrock manifold. The valve covers say "Chevrolet". Lots of fake stainless mesh hose with red or blue fittings. MSG 7 ignition and distributor. Chrome alternator and power steering pump. The losers took the rear end, a ten bolt with an Auburn posi unit and new axles. They even took the three Corvette style cross flag emblems off the sides and rear. She had big five inch black with white numbers Cl***ic tach and speedo gauges and destroyed the dash getting them out, along with several other gauges. The stereo was a pile, a Pioneer with a detachable face. If I catch these pieces of ****, I will make them sorry they did this to me and my family. I am out about $20,000, with limited insurance for a car that is thirtyfour years old. I may collect several thousand if I'm lucky. By the way, the losers left greasy finger prints all over the car, especially the hood. If you happen to have info that may help, let me know. Beware fellow car lovers, there are thieves preying on us, and keep your cars near and insured or you'll end up screwed like me.

I had my caddie stolen and reported it with in 5 minutes of it happening and the cops did'nt even want to know the color. I was pissed. I thought they would at least check all the roads leading out of the small town I was living in.Cops acted as if there was zero percent chance of finding them so why bother.I would do what Robert says and talk to a detective. Good luck.

Man that ****s, I agree with dyce, watch craigs list and e-gay. Maybe check with the local speed shops also to see if anyone is putting new projects together that may need similar parts, it's a long shot but you never know!

if it was secure storage do you have any recourse with the owners of the storage facility? you or your father are paying for that service and did not receive that service. I would think they would have some accountability there!
if you wanted the car stolen you could have parked it in the street in front of your house for free.

I learned the hard way when I lived in North Minneapolis, Had to chain down anything I wanted to keep outside. Caught a guy trying to take a rear end I was saving, had it chained to a tree. They drive thru the alleys looking for s****.

the only way to get the cops to give a damn about car theft is to tell them your gun was in the glovebox.

Thieves don't just take your stuff they take the part of your life you sold to make the money to buy the stuff! We can't be there all the time to protect our stuff but we might happen to be where a low life is ripping off someone else. Treat all thieves like they are stealing from you! Sorry for your loss these are not just cars.

Damn. It must be just the damnedest when you spend loads of time and money on a car and some thieves jack it for the cash they can sell the parts for. That ****s big time, I'll be watching Craigslist if it makes it all the way down here to MA.

EDIT: Can you post a detailed list of what they took?

Really sorry to hear about your loss. That's got to be a gut-wrenching feeling plus a strong desire to kill the s*** that did it. You said the car was stripped. So what do you have left? Just the body, frame and suspension? Did they screw up the body panels, gl*** and interior (other than the dash). If they left you a good body/frame a rebuild may not be out of the question, even though financially it may a long road back.

A lady friend had her 67 Vette 427 roadster stolen from a secured (is anything ever really secured) area. After they stipped off the interior, motor, trans, wheels, and chrome, they torched it. Not much left for the police to identify, but they did. Insurance paid, but tragic loss. Theives were never caught.

I never like to preach in a moment like this, but you really need to get yourself some "agreed value" insurance. Especially for your other rides. Small price to pay for full coverage.

sorry to hear bout your ride, I will keep a eye out as I am always on ebay and being in the towing business i have a couple of retired fellow officers that live near you that I will give a call to and inform them as they still have connections.

As far as the prints you found, no the cops wont run them no matter how hard you try to get them to, because its a property crime and not a violent crime, like murder

That's the truth! My car was stolen 5 months ago and never recovered. Sean Penn had his Grand National (read: stolen all the time) stolen in Berkley a few years ago. Cops were all over it when they found out he had a couple of guns in it. That and being a celebrity I am sure helped him find his.

Sorry to hear about your loss. Are you going to rebuild it?

I want to thank all the thoughtful response and the condolences. You guys all have some idea what it is like to have your prized possessions stolen and slaughtered. I hate thieves! I will get the stripped hulk back, I guess. The dashboard they destroyed getting the stereo and gauges out is the worst thing. It breaks my heart to look at her. I am trying to upload before and after photos of this disaster. I must say, I should have had better insurance, at least for agreed value. And security to me, now, means a .44. I sure appreciate you guys letting me ***** a little. Also, I got the better half doing the "I told you so", so in the future I will have to listen to more " it'll probably just get stolen, so why spend more money on it". Lovely. Also, I will be in touch with photos for the kind soul willing to post or publish the pix, but the engine and mag wheels are the only parts, and maybe the 5 inch speedo and tach, that someone might recognize. Thank you again. By the way, the car had a 6K recent paint job, 3 inch stainless/aluminum exhaust with Flowmasters, a 2003 Cadillac front seat, air suspension, new chrome bumpers, new radiator, new 700r4 ****** and conversion, new rear axles and bearings, new brakes, new front discs and bearings, new power steering, billet air cleaner, Demon carb, fuel pump, billet pullies, and a really nice built, dyno'd and balanced stroker motor with RHS heads out of Dallas for $7200 . Nickel and freakin' dime'd to death by Summit and Jeg's (no offense), custom dove grey full interior, cruise control, new carpet, custom steering wheel, new front and rear gl***, window tint, electric window conversion, rebuilt air cond., (trim pieces are next to impossible to find for a '73) , etc, etc, etc. My calculations are around 28K, with the original car. Not 10k. I'm sorry I'm crabby.
You know, as it sits right now, tonight, I don't think I will rebuild it just because I am feeling discouraged, and if I did rebuild her, I would just keep thinking I am going have her stolen again by some miserable pile of ****. So a rebuild will probably not be in her future, but I hope somebody with some optimism will rescue her from the crusher. Probably won't be me though. My wife would probably divorce me, too, so there is that aspect of it too. So I got that going for me.

Man, I understand...and I've also been there. Came out of the bar last year on my 40th Birthday to an empty parking space. Only thing that saved me was that it's a beast, and always on empty... It ran out of gas, before they could get it to the river... They also did a hatchet job on my dash to get out a $90 P.O.S. CD player, that didn't work anyway... Smashed the side window...all that ****. Police said that my interior kept them from being able to lift any prints. What unnerved me, was that my new motorcycle helmet was in the back seat-and that had never been out of my garage. The ***es went to my house, through my gates, into my back yard, and pushed open my side garage door...before hunting downtown for my truck. My kids play in that yard. What would these meth-heads have done if they had run into one of them? Grrr.
It'll get better. If you're like me you'll never stop being pissed...but, I think as time goes by-you'll find a way to get her back on the road... It does make you want to pepper somebody's *** tho...

Ditto Sko. Couldn've said it better.

  28. I have to think that while I wouldn't advocate hitting women, if I had one start into me at a time like this with the "I told you so" ****, she'd be walking around with a fat lip. Or a set of fresh new divorce papers.

I can appreciate what you're saying about not fixing it, too. Those cars can be a real pain to find parts for. Around here it's real odd, the junkyards I go to used to have a lot of 60s-70s cars, but since about 1998 or so all you find is 1965 or so and back. But what it is is those are "new" cars and not worth anything to the guys who own those yards.. so thats what they s**** when they need money. I'm that much younger, so I like some of the '70's cars. I almost bought a '77 El Camino years ago, with a six and a 4-speed at that.

So finding a parts car for one of these is tough, you almost have to find one in the paper that's cheap enough to use that way. Or find a guy building one for a demo derby, they like to use the Chevelles when they find them and I'm not sure why because I've never seen one get to the top 5 or so cars left. But that would be one place to round up another dash. If I had any pieces for one I'd offer them to you, at any rate... but the only thing I have right now is some '73 Gran Prix used pieces, cluster, etc.
