I remember back in the 60s, at my old home town track, the starter and his asst. would walk down the lineup and pull every drivers belts tight. Don't see that anymore.

FYI- CRM is no more, closed it down last week and he ain't giving up nothing :(:( Much of my mis-spent youth was spent at both those tracks and have some great memories of those days. Here's a few of the old RMMRA Englewood/Lakeside midget "gang."

some great memories on this post - the picture of the rear engine midget (robin's egg blue #24) owned by noted midget owner Mr. Ken Brenn (inducted this year into the national midget hall of fame) was driven a number of times by my uncle Fred "jiggs" Peters (1951 ARDC Champion) one time in particular on dirt at Nazereth Speedway where he flipped it in warm ups into the creek/swamp in turn 1, and told promoter Jerry Fried for more appearence money he'd do it again, then turned to Mr. Brenn and said " now give me my real race car back" (an upright with a 110 offy!

Unfortunately, thanks to lawyers, they can't anymore. Very few cars are perfect in construction, especially at the hobby level. If they actually inspect the cars and someone is hurt it opens them up to a lawsuit. If a track inspects a car it's like the track is certifying that the car is safe, which would be a key factor in proving negligence against them. I'm a safety nut and think it would be great to point out the risky situations that drivers put themselves into, but in the legal world, it's better to have blinders on. I've seen it all! Oil well casing roll cages brazed together, seats bolted to the interior sheet metal, belts bolted the same way, belts tied in a knot around the halo bars, steering shafts that run straight from the box to the steering wheel, etc.....

Roy C., Haven't heard anything about Lee Kunzman in many years, the last I heard he was working the Indy car circuit. Do you have any current info? Anyway, here's a great pic of him, G. Wooley and Opp. I believe Wooley survived pretty much intact but of course both Lee and Opp. paid a heavy price for their racing endeavours.

  19. I didn't see it mentioned, and I apologize if it was. But I saw first hand the biggest collection of sprint cars that I ever saw. Owned by Lindley F. Bothwell and kept at what is now the Bothwell Ranch.
It seems that Mr. Bothwell was a cattle herder and orange grower who built a farm on Oakdale Ave. in Tarzana Ca. in the early '20's between Ventura Blvd and Wells Drive.
I just drove past there recently and the farm is still there but the widow of lindley rents the grounds out to HIGH END car clubs ONLY. No private shows and damn sure no hot rods. I called, she was kinda grumpy.
The cars are still there but Ann has to be in her '90's by now and I have no idea what will happen to the collection or the farm when she dies.
Someone should make this a historic landmark because there is no way that anyone would think of a farm being there. It had to be built way before that area got popular.
If anybody knows of any more information I would love to hear it. I was 16 when I saw it in 1983. Do the math, I have gray hair coming in.

fuel pump - the picture of the red sprinter #3 in your post was the Jim Shaw car that my uncle drove to runner up in points in 1968 in URC behind Earl Halaquist in the George Nesler #2, however thats not my uncle in the pic as he, my dad, their brothers (they were all part of 13 kids) all had "the curse of the Peters family, as i have inherited (nobody has any hair on their head!).
