I'm buying a 64 Impala the guy swears he bought it new and it was a 409 car, 6 months later he had to have the engine changed... at the dealer. they put a 62 engine in it. he has a title but it is in someone else's name due to a divorce. He has owned this car for 44 years but has no other paper work. no tach on the dash or hole for one. i ran the vin its a v8 ss car.. worst case scenerio its a clone with orig paint what's it worth? is it me or does it seem like he has some help from stephen king?
This forum has an ongoing quest on a 409 wagon, they discuss all the details of a original car. http://www.chevytalk.org/fusionbb/showtopic.php?tid/178113/tp/1/ Frank
Talk to Aubrey here :http://www.bruneauperformance.ca/ He specializes in 409 stuff. I believe his screen name here is backtoflatheads try shooting him a PM. I know him personally, he knows his stuff !
Here are my thoughts, if he bought the car new. okay then 6 months later the dealership changes the motor. would'nt you think that would be a warranty issue. and if so would they put a 2 year old motor in it. I don't think so. but I've been wrong before. I think the guy is full of shit, and trying to sell you a bag of it.
Well, maybe, maybe not. What are your plans for the car? If you are laying out the cash for an all original 409 SS car, the guy selling should be able to produce every scrap of paper to prove it. If your looking for a clean car to burn around in, and the price reflects it, then who cares? My 2 cents.
The VIN will give the model and show weather the car was a six or a V-8. There is no way to prove if the car was a sb or a W motor.
when some one ordered a 409 they jerked an ss off the line and stuffed a 409 in. so, no numbers. check to see if the car has 2 fuel lines. one is the feed and the other is a return line. if so, it's a 409. with out the original engine you really wouldn't have much. 409's are expensive.
In this case it doesn't matter if the story is true or not. It is what it is and should be valued accordingly.
