Looks like the starter, in the front engine fueler picture BrokeDick posted, is purging his nitrous. Must have been cold that night.

YEAH!!!! This is a BAD rail. How much do you think to build this today? JUST LIKE THIS only legal, nitro, direct drive and 1200 h.p. - I say 25k using high quality parts.

3 to 4 guys with decent jobs could do it, and tow it with this... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=241555 on a single axle trailer!

  6. there was a push to get a 'retro' jr. fuel class going a few years ago here in so.cal but it petered out...i think 25k was the mark. 410 cid max, iron block with stock valve angle iron heads, two speed automatic, yadda, blah, etcetera...never gained any steam...

there is a set of current rules out there right now, real close to the old push but i'm not sure what the organizational aspect of the deal is...1550 lbs, 450 cid, iron/iron, injected, 50% min. any direct or 2 spd...looks cool

thing is, back in the day they weighed 780 lbs wet. COULD YOU FREAKING IMAGINE? a chassis that weighs 35 lbs?!?!?! 90% nitro...lots of guys paid for it, but man it must have been one hell of a ride.....

    picture stolen from net...

    Hello Magnus.

Do you have any pics of a funnycar ca 1980 Plymuth Arrow,
ex. Rune Fjeld? I think it was sponsored by "Alle menn".
Maybe pics from Mantorp or Santa Pod?

I think what's keeping many folks on the fence is what held me back for years...

*ZERO knowledge or experience with "mythical" Nitro.
*F.E.D.s and their history are intimidating.
*There are very FEW people who truly understand (and still want to RUN) the original style ones.
*Over 4 decades of "current" drag racing, with it's fetish for consistancy and time slips are all most racers care about.

Once everybody sees the BIG bang for the buck, how (relatively) cheap and simple these cars are to build and the fans actually EXPERIENCE driver style drag racing (4-speed Gassers, Altereds, Rails and Funny Cars that look like actual cars only way cooler) things might get interesting!

Or maybe these monsters are just for looking at in shows, magazines or message boards...Let's face it, most involved are happier with STORIES about back then. Nobody gets hurt. No money gets risked and old F.E.D.s make GREAT wall art, I know mine look COOL on my porch!

This has been a cool thread! I NEVER follow things on the internet. I've looked on every picture on this thread though...Good stuff!
Tim - you couldn't be more right! You just described every nostalgia AA/GS car "racing" today. They are way more interested in stories about "back in the day" than actually racing. Shit, they aren't even interested in good ET's! Couple of scary trips in one of these little cars and the owners decide that they are "show cars" or "tribute cars", even if they have no history of note. But you are right, you CAN recreate the past with just 1320 feet of asphalt, an old car, and a grasp on how they did it. I patch a bunch of used pieces together. Most guys have more money into their ho-hum bracket car than I have in my gasser, so it is definitely not a money thing. Even with NHRA's bs it is doable. Now get to widening that cage so I can fit in that other dragster! I'm dying to drive something with an actual wheel base to it.

LOL! It is no fun being Hardcore when all the other AA/GS guys have lace on their panties! So give me a ride with some wheel base and make it easy! LOL
    Later dude!

  21. Preach it Brutha!!!

I know that spending $$$ on something that the local track won't let me run has intimidated me. Frankly I've reached a point where I figure I'll find somewhere to run. I'm tired of hearing why it can't shouldn't be done. I'm going for it. Might be a bit drawn out for lack of $$$ but it's gonna happen regardless. Threads like this are great motivation!!! Thanks all for the pics!

BTW, when is the yard sale Tim? ;-)

WOW! What's the story on the '64 Tempest crash. That is one sharp car and I hope its' fixable. Love the sleeper look and it looks to have some possible serious power under the hood.

  24. royalshifter, is this the "Goss, Yates and Prudhomme" car or the early Greer Black car?
I've never seen Don mention his first ride in a rail. Dick Goss built a car in his one car garage in Monrovia. Don was racing a Vette at the time. Dick gave him the wheel. they set a track record at the old San Gabriel Strip on Rivergrade rd. after about 3 weeks Greer Black gave him the wheel and they upped the record and as they say the rest is history. That is Don isn't it?
