1954 Ford Skyliner/Skyliners/Sun Valley

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by jakespeed63, Feb 9, 2008.

  1. Came across a few of these recently, here in Orlando. One at the Rumblers car show ('56 ?) and another '54 for sale , near my job.
(PM me for the info if interested. Guy was asking $19k)
Florida sun seems to really have taken its tole in the plastic top. tiny little cracks all over. I guess the whole novelty of these cars has piqued my interest. America could really build-em in the 50's. Couldn't stop or corner , but sure looked cool.
The Chronicle of the American Automobile states:"At $2,164, same as the convertible sunliner, the bubbletop attracted respectable sales of 13,344 for the '54 model year. Apparently came with a clip-in sunshade, too.
Mercury offered the Monterey Sun Valley cousin for $2,582, but sold only 9,761 units.

  2. Pics of the '54, seems to make a nice mild Kustom.

To me those were the most beautiful car ever produced. The forward slanted chrome across the roof combined with the glass was the best ever......

Its tough to find one that the sun hasn't taken a toll on. So far all that I've, have had minor imperfections like you said, little cracks or badlyh foged so you were barely able to see through it. That first one is a 55 BTW.

  14. Hey Fattie, thanks for all the cool pictures! That gold model is incredible, and the Glasser Gasser aint too shabby either! My girlfreind would kill for that pink one!
Anyone interested in those Orlando cars, would be glad to drive over and take more pictures. Have not seen the project car that "56Sedan" mentioned, but could scout it out.

    jakespeed,

I can post some photos of the car prob this weekend. A friend of mine owns it and it may be at Zephyrhills in 2 weeks for sale.

it's a builder, I think it saw some service as a drag car in the 60s or 70s.

The glass top is cool as hell. It's one of those things that is definitely form over function. Good idea: a huge sunroof. Bad idea: turning your car into a permanent, sweltering greenhouse.

I owned a 55 Glasstop Crown for about 4 hours. 1 of 1999 produced that year. Real glasstops have 64B on the VIN tag, not 64A. If you're buying one of these you need to check that out as the plexi tops can be bought and retrofitted. It's the difference between a 20K car and a 70K car

  18. If that is a true '54 color, it's called Coral Mist, there's also a Cameo Coral, it's a bit darker. Ford, like most of the other domestics in the 50s, put out a lot of pastel colors, both solids and two-tones. I think Chrysler even did some 3 tones back then. Seems those cars were made to be two-toned, with how their body side moldings run the contours. Great pics!.

What a cool subject!! I have always loved these, my Dad had a 54 Merc. on his car lot once. I drove it a lot while we had it, and actually had a hard time selling it, country folks were not to sure about that there fancy top! The examples shown here are way cool, the glass gasser, the coral hard top has some sweet custom touches as well. Thanx to everyone for dredging up the cool pix!

  21. Man, those are some pritty cars, I have only seen a handful of them. Great thread!! I bet in the Florida sun you would bake in traffic.

sometime in my youth I lived in Great Falls Montana ,I bought a Sun valley ,green top ,piss yeller bottom. Beautiful car ,had a ton of problems, but I really liked it. Mine had a headliner type panel that had zippers around it and the heat wasn't terrible with that installed.

had a rough yellow 54 Mercury Sun Valley in the mid 70s that I paid $200.00 for & never got done . Sold it 30 years ago & bought another green one last year. Haven't decided if to leave stock or customized?

  26. The hulk of a Sun Valley is sitting in a local yard here. I was sad to see it there. Before anyone PM's me about parts, there was NOTHING but rusty steel left of it. I could only recognize it due to the panel on the roof missing.

I have a whole roof off of a '54 Ford glasstop including the trim, the glass and the visor mounts which are specific, and I'm just waiting for the right 2dht to come along to weld it onto. Might look cool on a wagon, too.

Here's a photo of a friend's Skyliner. They're definitely unique but pretty warm inside when the sun's shining. I've seen some with vinyl covers that snap on to provide some relief.
