Why not start the Drags earlier in the day???

Discussion in 'H.A.M.B. Drag Nationals' started by jalopy gal, Jan 31, 2008.

  1. Is there any reason we couldn't start the HAMB Drags earlier in the day? Seems like there would be plenty of people anxious to start earlier in the morning (say 9 or 10??).

I think earlier is a great idea, theres alot to cover in one day, most races open the gates about 8 am anyway !

with as many people that want to race, and the new 200 car limit for racing... i'd say earlier is a good, solid idea... two days of racing is even better. something needs to be done and thats a fact.

i dunno bout everyone else, but personally, i want to be able to "run what i brung"... its the HAMB drags, not the HAMB car show... i can go to a car show anyplace

Ryan has set a limit of 200 cars allowed to register/race this year to keep the wait time down in the staging lanes... not sure what the criteria will be for cars allowed in that number

I'm with Root,I didn't know about the 200 car limit either.
I do know that the Cow Pasture Reunion has always had a 150 car limit and started time trials at 10 and eliminations at 1 with in order to be done before darkthirty due to no lighting.
As for shade, there ain't much at Mo Kan although I suppose it's more than some and less than others.
I wouldn't care to start earlier than noon, but that's just me.

  11. The hottest part of the day comes between 12-3 so in a sense we start at the hottest part of the day. What's wrong with starting around 9? I think it would be easier to get more cars in AND to get more passes made. MoKan has lighting so night racing isn't a problem and as stated in another post, most other drags start in the AM. It just seems like it would be a real good idea. As for partying the night before and having to get up bright and early to get ready for racin', ya ever been to Bonneville or Australia? Those folks are partyin' till 3AM and then are up before the crack of dawn so they can be at the track at dawn.
The HAMB Drags are only once a year....don't you wanna be the first one out to show the others watcha brung?
I'm just sayin I'd like the idea of getting out there and getting started earlier. More time for more racin!!! :D:D:D

I knew that limiting the number of registered cars was being considered but didn't know it was a done deal.

How many pre-registered last year and no-showed? Would be a shame for someone not to come because they missed the cut-off and only have 150 or so of the registered 200 actually make an appearance. Just an example.

I'm coming regardless, just food for thought.

  13. We started racing earlier the first year. It was a HOT MUTHA!!! I seem to remember 104. Carl kept saying the staging lanes were open but it was tough to motivate as we were all hoarding our shady spots. After that all of us were in favor of a later, cooler race. We've had pretty gool luck in subsequent years in regard to the heat. There are pros and cons to either.

  14. I think what would really help is knowing how the 200 would be picked. Get any confusion out of the way. How bout it, Ryan, any word on that? Thanks!

  15. I'm suppose to go with 2 friends 2 early style feds and my altered. Like any thing else less than half show up,and I wouldn't like to get turned around at the gate after 24 hour tow.

It was a Hot Mutha the first year. Drippy wet, but not the good kind. Still alot of fun even with the small field.
I'm all for the late night and the early start but I don't know what's involved with the set-up at the track. Possibly setting a window of time for practice runs, grudge matches, etc.
It's Ryan's party, I'm just happy to get to come along. No matter when it starts you can bet your ass it's the best event of the year.

Time of day doesnt matter. Nothing beats a warm muggy Missouri day with a hot dry wind blowing across the Kansas plains. Ahh - the good life.

I couldn`t agree more... Not enough time to see all the cars in the pits, and race too....

I am with Jalopy Gal on knowing as early as we can on how the 200 car field will be picked.

I am for the 8AM open gate starting time. Let the grudge races, test and toon run until 5PM. Eliminations start at 6PM that way we race in the cooler evening, also last year there were very few that actually raced in the eliminations. Most of everyone coulden't wait to get back to the parking lot party. Only the guys that actually hade race cars stayed for heads up raceing. Fastest one in the class goes quickly.

That way if your to hung over to make the early time you can drift in when ever you want to.
