your first ever piece of speed gear ... the very first piece of speed gear I ever owned was one these ,a twin carb adaptor thing by Almquist... An Offenhauser dual Q-Jet intake for a SBC. I didn't even have a car to put it on, I was 15, didn't know any better, it was cheap and it said "Offenhauser" on it, I had to have it! .. I sold it a couple years later after I learned something more about cars and realized how useless it was. I did at least get my money back.

My first piece of speed equipment was a Harmon and Collins Magneto for a flathead Ford. The guy said it didn't work so I gave him a $100.00 for it. Got it home and cleaned it up. I spun the drive and got the shit shocked out of me! It worked fine, they guy didn't have it hooked up correctly. I've still got it, waiting for the right car to put it on. ordered a set of 'duals' from jc whitney for my 47 Dodge cpe. Installed enough to get it to the muffler shop to finish. Gads wotta rapper with dual 'smitty,s'. It wasnt the most popular car at the time but it sure sounded good. Took me everywhere i wanted to go,and was great at the drive in! so that covers both.
iwhen I was 16 I bought an 8" velocity stack at a flea market for a dollar. It looked ready for hotrod magazine sitting on my 2bbl 302 mustang with the chrome spay-painted stock valve covers. When I went in the house to get the camera, my step father not realizing how tall it was and pissed because I "borrowed" the battery from the family van slammed the hood and smashed the shit out of it.
Well,,,I guess if an engine can be call speed equipment,,, I bought a 62 mercury 390 and stuck it in my 54 Ford after I spun a main bearing with the inline six,,,HRP
i put a slick on my schwinn sting ray. made riding wheelies a lot easier....at least it seemed like it did
a worn out 750 Holley double pumper. all 8 bowl bolts were stripped, it leaked, and it was waaaaay too big. and somehow, it STILL outperformed the quadrajet. I am also proud to say I plumbed the entire thing with 3/8 rubber fuel line, and brass plumbing fittings from True value. How I managed to not burn to death in that car is beyond me.
My first ever piece of speed gear was one of those Almquist Y adapters too. It was on my first rod, in 1963-64. A 1927 Model T tourer body on an A chassis, still with rod brakes, and a '34 flattie dead stock but for the twin carbs and twin pipes with no mufflers, just some chicken wire rammed up the pipes. Leopard skin seat covers, and the body brush painted black. By todays standards, it would be a "rat rod".... it was rough as guts, but more fun than any rod I've had since.
Honestly and embarrassingly my first performance part was a collection of parts rolled into one...... An ex-race car 13b rotary engine, went into a shitty 100e Prefect. I was young and the car and motor were free. For you Aussies it was out of one of Allan Moffat's RX7s, kinda wish I still had that motor.
Much better than the first piece of speed gear. At least it worked which is more than I can say for the Stromberg 4 bbl (Buick) that I bought from Kustom Equipment for the Y-Block in my '51 Ford. I found out the hard way (both times as a matter of fact) that Ford's goofy Loadamatic distributors didn't like any carburetor but their own. So back to Kustom to buy a Mallory mechanical distributor at several additional $. When I complained that the carb didn't work the response was: "Oh, didn't I tell you that you'd need a Mallory? " On the other hand, her response was more like "Let's try again".
mine was a set of M/T valve covers for my 63 falcon sprint hardtop, and an assload of braided steel hose all sizes you can imagine that we found in a dumpster at my buddies workplace at the airport. i was 16 at the time.....
I cant even remember her name . The first speed equip that really made a big differance was a NOS cheater system in 84. Been hooked ever since . I have been known to drill out the jets ...
My first (and this was at 13 in '64) was a $75 '54 Customline with factory O/D, twin FOMOCO spots, a year old Earl shieb, and a '56 Merc 312. After a valve job and some electrical;;;;; Hell, I was damn near sceeeerd a that thing!!!!!!
I'd laugh like fuck if it were the same piece..ha ha ,I got mine from a guy called Ken Campbell who had tried it on a V8 pilot ute around 1969-70. After all how many of those things could have ended up in New Zealand?
