That was a really sad story. Dumb to race-but glorified in the movies as really bad-***. All those people killed. I question what the car without the lights was doing following the racers and what the hell all those people were doing out there watching at that time of night? They're all idiots-but don't deserve to be dead.
They did a sting last week in Oakland for this same stuff.Blocked both ends of the road and bagged a whole bunch of rice burners.
It really sad when you Dad is out there watching these ****n Idots and he dies also ... When will this stop ....
looks as if the car that killed all the people came on the scene after the race started and it being dark and the tire smoke did not see the people standing in the road untill it was to late. who would expect a bunch of people to be standing in the road in the middle of the night.if the story on google home page is correct i feel for the driver of the white car.
This is also what I read. Can you imagine going to work in the wee hours and have this happen to you on the freeway.
Been there done that years ago, I look back now and realize how stupid and dangerous it was. When your young you think your invinsible. As for the older gent, hell I probably would have gone watch, if the chance arose, bet a whole lot can say that on here, feel bad for anyone that died or lost loved ones.
A couple of years ago in Little Rock, a teenage girl who had attended our church was killed in a street race. The punk who lost control of his black Mustang got a misdemeanor traffic ticket. He showed no remorse. He went out and bought another black Mustang. The girl's mom gets to spend the rest of her life thinking about her only child and wishing "if only....." It really pisses me off when losers get on here or any other site and boast and brag about their street racing exploits. Only losers race on the street, no matter how deserted, late at night, or anything else. The NHRA was formed to get the dumb***es off the street. There are plenty of legal, safe drag strips on which to race. Here in Arkansas, after a street race-related death a few years ago, the state legislature outlawed the use of nitrous on the street, even for trucks towing heavy trailers, etc. Ultimately, legislators across the country will outlaw any modification to a stock vehicle. We will get to drive cars just as they came from the factory. All because some punks want to show what bad***es they are.
This is a horrible story, but this type of racing has gone on for a very long time. Now that more and more drag strips are being closed people don't have any plase to race. I'm from So.Cal. and here you really don't have many places to race LACR is gone FAMOSO is 2 hours away, Pomona does'nt do any thing for us, Irwindale is 2 hours away, fontana is 3 hours away. Here in ventura county all you have is the streets, I admit to have street raced in the past and I was lucky that I never did any thing to endanger peoples lives. The way I see it is that spectators are always in danger in any type of event. You never know whats going to happen!
I completely agree Standing in the middle of a "highway" and you don't expect to perhaps, maybe, get hit by a car that is driving on that highway? Dumb ****s
Irwindale is 2 hours away 2 hours is certainly further than 6 feet. A 2 hour trip most would prefer to take.
Terrible story. I've done dumb things, even on public roads. And when I read stories like this I cringe- How must everyone involved (and still alive) feel? It is never worth it. Drag racing, burnouts, "drifting": Not for the street.
I just fired off a couple of E-Mails to CNN and MSN for their use of the line, "ILLEGAL DRAG RACE KILLS EIGHT", informing them it WAS NOT a "DRAG RACE", but a "STREET RACE". Street racing killed those people, not drag racing. SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL DRAG STRIP!!!!!, and give these news sourses an education on what is and is'nt drag racing. The opponents of any racing facility is just as much at fault for this event as the yahoos' who were street racing.
I know for a fact this type of racing is going on here in Ct.not far from are state capitol.I'm not only talking crazy kid **** but trailered in Pro cars running under 10S.Yeat No one wants a strip either opened or Ct.Dragway reopened.NIMBY rules If you don't personally see it it ain't happenning or it's only crazy kids. Not long ago 2 mustangs were involved in a street race with one hitting a 3rd car not involved in the actual race.if you haven't already seen it check my post on getting Ct.Dragway reopened
the last street race I stopped by in dallas in the 80`s was crazy ! every one stood in the road ? that they were racing on and at the last second would jump out of the road before getting run over ? and then fight`s would break out cause they were shoving in to each other ?
This is a cut & paste from another board, seems there are a couple tracks not far from this senseless accident. Subject: RE: [funnycarmemories] Seven killed at US drag car race > > This is my home town -- just about five miles away and a notorious street racing area. The thing that ****s the most is, Maryland International is 20 minutes away and Capitol Raceway is 40 minutes away. Both places welcome street guys on Friday nights. bp
What a terrible thing. The victims are as much at fault as are the racer. Does any know what type cars where involved?
It will never end as most people "don't think that it would happen to me"... Well, most of the time it doesn't, but what if it did? I don't care if a street racer dies or if a known gang member gets murdered in a drive-by shooting. Doesn't bother me at all. Just weeding out the s***. But.....when innocent people get hurt or killed, thats when I get pissed.
Maybe if all these screwballs went to the strip and raced instead of the street drag strips would be profitable enough to keep open. Both drag strips here allow grudge racing during the bracket races for what would be street race otherwize. [Now that more and more drag strips are being closed people don't have any place to race.]
The guy who did all of the killing was not a street racer but an idiot drivng too damn fast on the same hiway (Probably impaired). Even killed a p***enger in his car. Situation was also caused by too damn much smoke from burn-outs done by the idiot street racers. Two bad things about this one. 1st is the needless loss of 8 innocent lives. And the second, is painting these idiots as "drag racers' when they are in fact street racers. Yeah, I drag raced when I was young. On back country roads, not dual lane highways. Of course no dual lanes existed in my area, nor where their any official drag strips to use. But we didn't pull burn-outs, because a burn out only slowed you down, plus tires weren't cheap. Many people used retreads back then, and they just did not hold up well in a burn-out.
For once, Chili and I are in total agreement. having grown up in a "cow town", I remember when the local strip made it fun to be there...Hell, probably the most fun I had was doing an event called "Beat the Heat" where you got to race actual cops in actual cop cars. it was a blast...Not that there is anything remarkable about outrunning a caprice cl***ic, but I remember the stands and pits would be packed. fast forward 15 years, and I get ****ty looks from cops just driving home in traffic. The street squirrells in Austin have caused a couple major accidents, and at least 3 deaths that I am aware of, and probably scads of injuries and accidents I didn't hear about. The worst part is, I can't blame just the Imort crowd...Or the Muscle car crowd...or the Street rodders...They get together and start ******* on one anothers boots and the next thing you know, a bunch of dip****s are lining the access road on a MAJOR trafic exchange, and the Cops are looking for guys with loud, fast cars. and I can't blame them. sooner or later, guilt by ***ociation sticks.
Eeeeeediots, racers and spectators. The cops here in Oz ran 'Smokey One' a worked cop car at the strip in an attempt to entice street racers to head out to the strip. A family friend that was in the police at the time and involved said they were amazed at just how fast these cars were. They seldom won a race!
