What's 10 grand worth of hot rod look like?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by alteredpilot, Feb 17, 2008.

  1. so my wife and i are stitting at dinner the other night and as always we got to talking about cars.

now a few years ago she worked a deal behind my back to get her a car i didnt want and but as it were its ours now and i just finally got going on it.

My car has been parked for about a year while i do other stuff to save further wear and tear.

in the mean time i've had a few projects come and go. i guess i just like projects.

so...as we're talking she looks me dead in the face and says...
"why dont we just sell both cars and just buy something already done? i dont care what it is, i just want a hot rod i can drive around in "

you can imagine my utter delight to hear such things, but i was horrified at the idea of selling my darling little sedan. or the thought of buying something i didn't do myself. her car i would much rather put in a dumpster, but i digress....

so if i sold her car i know i wouldnt have enough to buy a nice little driver, if mine and my current project went too we'd probably be in around 10g's to go shopping with.
now, i dont pay attention to pricing on running cars because i'm in the piles of parts business, and most cars for sale dont suit me anyhow

    SOOOOOO>>>>
    JUST FOR GIGGLES.....
what's 10 grand worth of running hot rod look like?

  2. I bet you'll get a shit-load of guys telling you what they built for 10k... not bought for 10k, which is what you're asking.

Unfortunately 10k doesn't buy you much these days.

    Sam.

Haven't seen anything for $10,000 I would buy. Going to be hard to find something unless you are really lucky! Thanks, BOBBY FORD P.s. Have you looked in the classified? might give you some idea what you can get for 10g

  4. i know....

my wife is far less patient than I....

maybe some reality in pricing will help to foster a little of that. ;)

yeah i look at the classifieds all day. problem is there's too many one post wonders selling stuff that suits me no way, no how. and another project i don't need.

the trick is getting her to let me sell 'her' car and finish my roadster...

10K hardly even buys you a decent driver project worth anything anymore...

and before someones says anything to the contrare,,,(meaning something real cool that will actually BE SOMETHING and not just a patched together POS that barley runs)

Go window shopping before you sell your other cars off - hit all the internet sale sites. Without knowing what type cars you are into, you may not be thrilled with what you can get for $10k.

    from nowhere...

This is a topic we've been talking alot about among my friends.
I can remember when $10,000 was a DREAM amount of money to have to spend on a car, it bought you a hell of a nice driver.
It doesn't seem to buy much of anything, nowadays.
I just bought a '63 Galaxie, as a daily, because they are one of the few cars ( and their other early 60's counterparts ) that are left, that are still even close to reasonable, in solid, functioning form, under the 10 G mark. I picked it up for $6000.00, I'm putting a trans. in it, rebuilding the front end, and it needs the carb rebuilt, gas tank replaced, and a bunch of other little things, it'll add up...
As far as a hot-rod goes, it is not a lot to go looking with, it seems.

Sounds like your wife wants something to drive. Buy something fairly stock and customize it as you go.

    Both are then happy.

You can buy some really nice solid stockers for $10K.

Sad but true. Think I saw that on Craig's list or maybe ebay. Motherfucker should be kicked out of the state or at the very least sent back to Florida!:D:D -stick

  15. there should be some kind of warning before showing that , well what ever it is !!:D

  16. frankly, i've got enough work and not enough time. between her car, my roadster build, my bike build and my sedan waiting in the wings, the last thing i wanna do is start customizing ANYTHING.

the car she worked me into is a fairly solid stocker and she likes it. and when its 'more done' it will be a real nice machine. what she doesnt like (and what she didnt take into account) is the fact that it needed a bunch of small stuff from jump street. me doing things the way i do, i wasnt going to put it on the street without fixing what was wrong. well its taken me this long to get around to it and now i have all the correct parts and it starts going back together tomorrow.

thing is is that its gonna take probably another 8 grand until i'm happy with it (she'll be fine in about 2 grand)...these classic muscle cars will nickle and dime you to death! plus i have to correct all the little things that were not done 'correctly' over the last 40 years....

i refuse to have my wife driving around in a mullet mobile...ya know...

i know the smart thing to do is just bite the bullet and shell out the dough to get her car 'RIGHT' and it will be the last i hear about it....

$10k cars are a hard deal these days for sure... I'd be looking for early 60's falcons if that was my budget.

This is going to come across like a classifieds ad and I apologize for that but I've been planning on re-listing this for 10k in the near future. It's a little rusty but it's hard to find something that hits the cool factor for 10k from what I've seen lately.

Lots of decent driveable T-buckets out there for 10K. Tons of 50's and 60's shit if you're willing to take a 2 door sedan as opposed to a hardtop.

What kind of cars do you like? I've never had 10K to buy anything with, but I'm sure I could spend it if the opportunity arose.

(I get the feeling that if you're the guy who says "i have to correct all the little things that were not done 'correctly' over the last 40 years" you're probably not going to like anything in that price range.)

Perhaps sell off some projects and build what your wife and you want.

  25. i am building what i want. fora fraction of the turn key price.

its not so much what she wants as what she wants NOW....HAHA!

she's lucky. she just likes cars. me, i'm narrow minded. if i hafta sell my sedan, its gotta be something we'll both be cool with. she'll be cool with anything, but i cant afford to buy a turn-key anything like what i'm building...

    what a dilema....

    happy wife...happy life...

im putting my 51 up for $14,500 in the next few weeks, but a 10k car is hard to find that is a reliable driver. but i will list it on this site before i try any other venue. i would rather see one of our members get it and enjoy it than some joe that will stuff a lot of billet into it and ruin the car. i hope nobody thinks this is an ad because the car is blown apart for paint right now, not even close to being ready to sell!!!

I just picked this survivor up today. I paid $7,000 Cdn for it, and it might take another grand or so to get it back to street ready condition. It's been sitting in storage for 20 years. They ARE out there, you just have to look.

Mitch, Mitch, Mitch. I leave you alone for a week and you're selling the farm. Stay the course my man.
Knowing you , you will not drive another man's work. If you do then you will " just fix this thing" or "just re-do that, Honey" . Pretty soon it will be completley re-done and $25k later..... I've passed on $25k for my made at home hot rod.
