Now this is just amazing...... What kind of a car do you put this on ? 675,000 for a license plate that has to be renewed every year. I guess its all relative tho, many people would scoff at what we pay for some of the stuff we have / use..... Delaware drivers had a chance to buy a coveted license plate at an auction on Sunday. A Wilmington-area developer bought the rare license plate for $675,000 at the afternoon auction. The plate has the No. 6 in sharp white lettering against a black background. Fifty years go, the state's license plates were black and white. The governor had No. 1, the lieutenant governor had No. 2, the secretary of state had No. 3 and so on. When the state changed license plate colors, the old tag owners were allowed to keep the plates, and they have since jumped in value. Before the auction, it was predicted the rare plate could fetch close to $1 million. "There has never been one that we can do***ent sold lower," said Illiam "Butch" Emmert of Emmert Auction ***ociates. "And we think it has value somewhere between $500,000 and $900,000." Yale and Harvard graduate Charles Murphy Jr. previously owned tag No. 6. He had it on his car before he died in December. The only way his five children could share in the tag's value was to sell it.
I've seen this happen in the UK.It was a big market at one time for "cherished numbers".There were brokers there who handeled them.
So ...... How do you prevent theft ? Hell, the guys in my `hood steal plates just because they are current -
My dad's 1930 Packard's license plate was "DU 32"... I told him to hold onto the plate to sell to a deuce owner, but he didn't think it would bring that much Donman, the plates that are really expensive in Delaware have single digit numbers, so if someone's dumb enough to steal "#8", they better not drive around with it.
A license plate with nothing but the number "1" on it went for a record $14 million at a charity auction Saturday Feb 16th in the ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates Saeed Khouri, a member of a wealthy Abu Dhabi family, wouldn't say how many automobiles he owned or which of them might carry the record-breaking single-digit plate. "I bought it because it's the best number," said Khouri, whose family made its fortune in real estate. "I bought it because I want to be the best in the world." The oil-rich UAE began auctioning off vanity license plates last May. Ordinary automobile license plates issued to drivers here — and even most other vanity series plates — carry both Arabic and Western numerals and script, defining the issuing city and country. Khouri's plate, however, has only the Western numeral and no letters. The record sale surp***ed the $6.8 million that was paid for an Emirati license plate at an earlier auction with the Western number 5 on it — also without Arabic numerals or letters. Proceeds from the auctions, which are held in a lavish hotel here, go to a rehabilitation center for victims of traffic accidents. On Saturday, 90 license plates were auctioned off in all, raising a total of $24 million. The previous five such events raised more than $50 million.
I know those plates are a big thing in De. My dad paid a couple hundred dollars for one I think. $675,000 might be a little..... crazy?
I think its ironic that you refer to the numerals as "western" when in fact the numerals we use ARE Arabic!
I once sold a 1979 Del. MC license plate that was mint for $560. I have had other Del plates that were used sell for $70-$300. Its crazy.

Me, I'd rather have 10 $67,500 cars to play with with regular old ****py plates on them.Or maybe one nice $100000 car and set up a $500,000 endowment to help HAMBers in need. Just a matter of priorities, money and greed.
I'd put that plate on an old Ford Granada... One with the broken gas filler door just to make people scratch their heads.
I lived there for two years; that's not the strangest thing you'll see in Delaware. Only three counties, and the whole damn state is a credit card processing center. I'm told my old $85K house is now worth over a quarter mil.
Number 9 is on some run-of-the-mill BMW. I've seen number 3 around somewhere, but the car it was on made no impression on me whatsoever. A couple of the low 2-digits are on your typical Euro luxury sedans. A few years back, a single-digit plate sold with the car it was on. I think it was an old Datsun convertible. It's not like the DuPonts are putting them on their Bentleys or Rolls Royces. Yes, Delaware is a dumb place.
I better go check out the DEL license plate hanging on my kitchen wall that Deleware George gave me a couple of years ago.......
