[IMG] "The Hard Guys" A/FD with the chute out at New England Dragway. This was a very strong running fueler from Malden, MA. This car was garaged in my neighborhood, at the Edmund St. garages. During the late sixties there were three dragsters, three altereds, one funny car, and a dozen hot rods, all within a five minute walk of my house. I would give anything to go back in time.

This is Al Maynard's '57 D/G car from early-to-mid '60s at Milan Dragway (shitty pic!). It had a truck rear end with 5:something gears, 10% engine setback, injected 327, 4-speed...all the right stuff.

I had admired that car for years and wondered aloud (in my Cruis'news column) what had happened to the car, as I thought it would be ultra-cool on the street.

Well, I heard from the guy who bought it and restored it (lettering and all) and he says, "Driving it, you use all the major muscle groups just to steer the thing!" I loved that response! Maybe I wouldn't like a straight axle car after all.

    Naw...I still would.

I used to have a guy, can't remember his name - too long ago, do some machine work for me at his shop "Argo Machine Shop" on the corner of Willow and Spring in Redwood City. A couple blocks off Middlefield. Small little place never seemed too busy. Been closed for a long time now. I'm gonna S%*t if that guy built this when he was younger and I never had any idea...grumpy old guy but knew his stuff. Man what a car!

It is a heavily modified German 1958 Lyod. The body work was done by a guy name Johnny Silva. They were runner up in their class at Indy in 63 or 4, but they almost did not get to compete. It took some convincing to the tech guy that it actualy was a production car at one time. They just happened to have the VIN tag in their tool box, that proved to the tech guy that was not a scratch built custom body.

Bill, the old Midwest group don't seem to get the share of credit that they deserve. With Rich Maskin (now Dart heads), Dave Kanners (prior to Pro stock he ran the Midwest AM/Sp 57 Vette and then Prontito in B/G), Sam Gianino (57 D/G Vette The Executioner), Dick Arons, Wally Booth (a bunch of great Booth and Arons cars-too many to list) and Al Maynard and a few others, great racers all. The first ten grand holeshot I ever heard was Wally Booth in the green 69 "Good Times" Camaro-I was so stunned hearing it come out that I walked over and asked him.

Al Maynard is still around and is very approachable and still is active in the hobby. I believe he is member of the Road Knights although Harms Way would set me straight on that point if I am in error.-Great memories-Jim

How cool is this? You have a successful TV variety show, you go drag racing, hang around some cool people and get pawed at by Linda Vaughn. Some people are just born lucky dammit!!

<!-- / sig -->OK you great guys are gonna force the issue. OK, here's how it goes. the car was built in Burlinggame/San Mateo 1956 and 1957. It was photo'd in the San Francisco Chronicle e before it went onto the floor at the GNRS in 57. Lots of photos and write ups at the show. I have photos of it opening day at Half Moon Bay with Andy Brizio flagging the car. Then, let's see, the photo you see at Bakersfield. All under the ownership of michael Sharpe of Burlingame/Redwood City. He joined the service..that's another story. Mom sold the car to Curt Stiles of Fremont Machine Shop. He beat Mickey Thompson in 62 against one of his super cutlass....whatever. Curt sold the car to Jack Alby of Argo Machine who ran the hemi with the blower at Fremont and ?????? NO PICTURES NO DOCUMENTATION. Kent Weaver, who used to street race me on El Camino on Friday and Saturday nights bougt it while he was at or right after Sequoia High School and put it in Storage in 65. I pulled it out and then that handsome kid from Fresno got his picture taken in it! Check out the photos "there still out there.." at jam@jameng.com. Thank you all for your constant support. I appreciate it, and yes Terry O...there IS a Santa Claus
