It's funny, the bottom of my fender had the exact same shaped distortion. The car is looking really smooth in primer.

Ohhhhh my...that roof line is awesome!
Yeah, the body still needs some work...but that chop makes ANYTHING else you have to do WORTH the effort.
Man...that shape is so smooth it wouldn't raise the dust off a dirt road!

    thanks fellas!

i love fadeaways on the Bettancourt and Barris Mercs....i think they look amazing and really make a Merc very liquid like...they flow like crazy...and they look easier to do than they actually are!

Looks great Sam! Makes a huge dfference when it's all one color. You can get a better idea what it will look like when done. Candy orange with blue flames....sounds awesome!!!!

I either love them or hate them depending on my mood...

They are not easy to do right. It requires modifying the bodyline for pretty much the whole length of the car. That being said, your car makes me think they'd look good on it.

Sometimes, I think fades remove part of the personality of the Merc and even make the lines look funny. I generally think they look better with a hardtop, but I think with the flow of your chop, they might look pretty cool...

exactly,,the taper at the door needs to taper all the way to the back to the end of the body line,,more than just filling the hump :)

i agree, that is why i won't do them. not that i havent thought about it,,.like i said i love them on the other mercs mentioned , but that bodyline dip is part of the charachter of what drew me to mercurys in the first place :)

BadBob,, yeah..would probably be cool,,,but i want to keep it with an early 50's look...if it ever gets paint i want it something more subued. i have a color in my head i have picked out if it ever gets that far :D

What do you mean"IF" it ever gets that far? You just have to make it your goal! It would be sad to get it so far and not finish it. Nobody said it has to be done in 6 months!

  20. looks good sam....as usual. the back window turned out just right. i read somewhere one time that sam barris said that the fade-a-way was the hardest thing he did to his merc. your right you have to go from the hump all the way to the end of the rear fender (quarter panel).

  26. Sam, I had a few questions if you could....

    1) How much work have you done the nose on the hood, just de-chromed it or did you 'nose' it too and lay it back a bit?

    2) Did you shave the drip rails? Were they originally just welded to the roof? I was wondering what it looks like under there once you cut them off.

    3) What does the factory door gap look like between the fenders and the doors, pretty big based on how the doors swing out?

    Sounds like a plan Stan...

I like sort of 'unfinished' Mercs if that makes sense... Not in the sense of being half-done but just so that it still has some of it's original personality. It makes them look faster to me...

The hardest part of customizing is knowing when to stop... :D
