    RIP

In 1995 I used my tax return to buy a used set of boyds wheels for my suburban.
At that time that was the coolest thing for me ever, I had a legitimate set of wheels from a big name custom designer.

I grew up seeing and being influenced by his builds. He was cutting edge in the 80's, and early 90's.

My all time favorite build by him was the "boyd air" 57 chev conv.(it was really a 59 chev with a 57 skin.
Ironicly It was designed by chip foose, and hammered out by roy-2 of the best.
I got to see it once at the charlotte auto fair, and I spent a good hour looking it over.

this was the only pic I could find of it on the web, I will have to find my magazine and get a 3/4 front shot of it to edit in later:

  3. Sad to lose, such an influential "car guy".He started out building cars after work,at home, just like everybody else, and took that dream to a level, most wouldn't even think of being possible. At the WoW show here last year,he and Jo walked through the show, and stopped to look at many cars.He had many kind words of encouragement, for the individual builders,of various styles of cars represented, including a few very traditional hot rods.:D RIP Boyd, and build some rides with Roy and Gray,we'll miss you all.

not everyone agreed with or liked his vision of how to build cars but nobody can deny the influence he had in our world.think about how many people he helped to get their start in hot rodding and bike building. i am sure he will be missed.

I must say I haven't read every post on this thread but I am impressed that all I have read show respect for a fellow Hot Rodder. I thought we might have had the odd disrespectful one but I obviously underestimated the HAMB.

For all the ribbing Boyd took on this board it can't be denied that he was a valued member of the rodding community. I'm not a huge fan of his work but it was quite a shock to read the headline of this thread. I'm a bit sad.

    RIP Boyd

Wow i heard from a friend tonight and didnt believe it! I admit I have been among the guys that poked fun at the Great Hawaiin shirted one and seeing the tv show broke my heart. That said i will never forget seeing the Cadzilla as a kid at the Sacramento Autorama. It was a come to Jesus moment i will never forget I remember being stunned by the cool and just staring, standing next to my dad realising I was a Kustom guy at heart. I have moments like that to thank for being way to broke to get in any real trouble spending all my money on car mags and parts. Like em or not guys like Boyd are few and far between and he was a total game changer. Thanks Boyd and I am rockin the hawaiin to work tomorrow for you man!

WELL WHAT CAN I SAY !!

    I feel kind of empty.
Although I didn't think much of the shows & how it appeared things where run, he though a lot of respect for everyone in the industry.

We run a grass roots shop here, but tucked away in the back corner is a 4 door sedan inspired from the Boydster. (YES, a sedan)
You know, the sleek style, layed back everything, grill, windsheild, lights etc. So I guess I had a true love of the 'Americanised' car as everyone here calls it here in Australia.

Maybe it's time to continue with the work I started, on a hand fabricated car that was inspired by a man with pure vision.
(little will people know it is in his honour)

RIP Boyd & our heart felt condolances to his family, freinds and workers.

This is very sad news. Whether we liked it or not he brought a unique vision to the rod and custom community that will last forever. While I was never a big fan of the show you can't help but admire what he's done as well as the charitable contributions as read above. We've lost a modern icon as large as any of our traditional heros. Very sad indeed.

Could not believe the post, thought it was another post to hammer away at his styling of hot rods. I am truly shocked, and sad. The loss of any talented car designer and builder is a loss of inspiration to us all. We will remember him and his cars for many years to come.

Like most influential people he could be loved or hated depending on your taste. Now is not the time for the hate, just respect for his contribution. His passing is truely a sad occurance. RIP Boyd.
