I had parts of my truck blasted by 2 different people. One guy kind of chewed up and warped stuff, the other made it look like it just was stamped. Not sure wat the difference is, but if you get somebody worth a poop, blasting works well. I also used the wire wheels on smaller areas, but for an entire vehicle, that sucks.

  2. 3M Metal Prep, thinner, and 3M scuff pads.

Mix 50% with water in coffee can and put some thinner in another coffee can. Dowse one scrub pad in the metal prep can and scrub away. After cleaning a decent-sized area, do the same with another scrub pad dowsed in thinner and clean over the area where you just applied the prep.

Make sure to wear thick rubber gloves and don't wear any clothes you don't want ruined. It's a strong acid, but it really does the trick. You can buy it at most auto paint supply stores.

Surface rust I grind off with 80 grit (actually not grinding, use the variable speed buffer/sander) if in large areas or hand sand with small areas. Sometimes, a wire wheel. You've gotten a lot of in-depth answers when you only asked about surface rust.

After, I hit it with a good degreaser. Then treat with either Picklex or Rust Blast. I prefer picklex because then it doesn't have to be hit with water again (i.e. water and bare metal = new rust). Picklex can be left untreated for a long time inside and can be painted over directly. (Same with Rust blast or other converter, but rust blast gets washed with water after application).

finally, before paint (or primer) I hit it with a scuffing pad.

There even is a spot that has a hole the size of a quarter! ;)

seriously though...I sand and use osphos to treat the metal then lightly sand and primer.

  12. Hand sand or wire wheel on Milwaukee angle grinder...also, Ospho...good stuff. Yep, I do it the hard way too. This time I was lucky enough to find a `57 from Texas, so I have much less rust than my last couple...

I also use the purple stripping wheels on the makita power tool, you just want to use the edge of the wheel, not the face. The ones I used to get were from sunchaser, but I think 3M might have bought them out or something? anyways, they work....
