I've got a couple of pictures of an early fifties Chevy with the hemi transplant. I'll see if I can find them later tonight.

I think YOU should do it, post lots of pictures, do a good job, and drive the hell out of it!! :D If a 454 can fit in there (which I've seen) then you can fit a hemi. You just might have to be a little creative.

    DO IT!! :D

a Hemi on a 49 chevy would be like putting ketchup on a bannana.

    just plain wrong.

No question that a Hemi has max cool factor, but for a shiverlay even I would not use a Hemi, well except for the 62 Nova that I ran in B/Gas a lifetime ago..... I vote for a Cad 500.

Guy in Clarkston, WA had a 50 Olds with a 331 Hemi and B&M Hydrostick. Went like stink - very clean swap.

I think it would be cool and thats what Hot Rodding is all about right? Its all about what you want and thats rare around here with a wife and three youngens, very seldom is about what i want.Ya dig?:D
Does anyone know how much the 331's cost.I just want a complete buildable engine and it does'nt have to run.

Most of the guys around here that are 16-33 are all ricers, they're all like whats a hemi?I tell them its like V-TEC but the difference is you win the race.LOL!

I've seen one in a straight-axle 59 T-bird and it was pretty decent, so have at it.

If you do not yet own a 331 then you have some choices at different price levels. Also, keep in mind that these things are expensive to rebuild and there will be gobs of very pricey eye candy available.
There are three distinct versions of the 331 Hemi and one 331 Poly which can be converted to a Hemi. There are also truck, marine, and industrial versions with some similarities and lots of overlap.
1). 51-53 has the ½ bellhousing/extension at the rear of the block. 51-53 have small-ish ports and valves. All 51-53 have 2-bbl carbs. There is no correct 4-bbl intake for the 51-53. Generally, these will be the least money.
2). 1954 block looses the extension, gains large ports and valves. All 54 versions have 4-bbl carb. Compression remains at 7.5:1
3). 1955 changes water pump and intake manifold design, comp goes to 8.5:1. This will be the highest value engine.
Note; There have been 54 engines found in early 55 cars with 55 stampings.
4). 1956 331 is the poly engine. Do not let the poly head fool you, it can run as had as you like, it just does not have the cool factor.

Hard to say what the values should be in AL. Around the NW I have seen prices continue to escalate; asking prices start around $600 and go over $2000 for a complete '55, which is 354 territory, touching on the 392 doorstep.
Also be sure to look through the Hemi tech index for more details or send a pm if ya want.

A hemi in a Chevy is the only engine other than another Chevy engine to put in a Chevy. Chevy in a Chevy or a hemi in a Chevy, there is no other choice. If you can do it, do it.
