I had a big block 383 Chrysler in my Model A Coupe, drove it around for a while, then it ceased to work well, something about aluminum flywheels, 4.88 gears, and 7,000 RPM. Bottom end never failed, but boy did those rings and valves hate me. Pulled it out with 80% leakdown on half the cylinders and 50% on the other half.

Then I bought a HP 440 from 38Chevy454 here on the HAMB, stuffed it in the Coupe, got it fired up, then realized the 440 belonged in my '70 Challenger, which I've been working on until I find another big block Chrysler to put in my Model A.

So, anyone local got another big block Chrysler? Maybe a low deck, because then I could use my 3 deuce setup and Spalding Flamethrower I collected for the other 383 on it.

I'm trying to stuff one into my '51 Plymouth. I had to say good bye to the original firewall and inner fenders. Polished aluminum Cal Custom-style valve covers off the 'bay. It's a '75 block from an RV with a steel crank and no VIN numbers stamped into the oil pan ridge. Edelbrock Performer intake and I've got a 750 CFM Edelbrock or the original Quadrajet for it. Top it off with some 2.73 Gears for some nice low-RPM Interstate cruising. Face it, in Iowa you've got to be able to cruise the Interstate because there's nothing here I'd want to see.

This '37 was my daily driver from 1986 to 2000. The 440 was a squeeze, but it fit. Ran 13.2s at the strip and always got 10mpg. I miss that car :(

I have a 440 in my 73 challenger. It's your basic old-skool 70s build; mopar 509 cam, ported 452s, 10.5:1 comp pistons, and a CH4B intake. Simple and goes like hell. Best setup I have ever seen of a big block chrysler in a vintage car would be a long ram intake; on a hoodless rod, the carbs sit over the tops of the fenders. Too, too cool.

I think the first production year for the 440 was 66, but the big block wedge goes back to 59. Last year made was 78. The 78 monaco and fury 440 police package cars were the fastest American-made production cars that year.
