I just pickedup 2 Ford 9 rear ends. Tags are as follows:
WDC-CA/275 7 mb 116 so this is from a Mercury with 2.75 gear ratio?

    WEB AD 2G9/ 275 9 812B so Cougor with 2.75 gear ratio?
    Now the information here:http://www.fordification.com/rearends-ford05.htm
Says that they are 28 spline. But another website says that if it has a small hole on the end with two holes on either side by the lugs it's 32 spline. Is it possible that these were on trucks and hve 32 splines? Also I don't know anying about gear ratios. What type of driving is 2.75 good for?

2.75 gears are for cruising, and gas mileage, not performance. The 28/32 spline thing seems to have no logic to it, I've seen six-bangers with 32's and big blocks with 28's. Whatever came down the slide, I guess.

Thought the ford spline count was 28-31.

Ok thanks one rear end is for me and one is for a buddy. I live 7 Miles from work and want to use my truck sometimes. Not a DD all the time but cruising around so 2.75 is going to be OK for me. MY buddy is a quarter mile guy so he may want to change gears. I got these for 50 bucks each. Good deal?

I think you might mean 31 spline?
2.75 is a highway gear. Had a set in a mates Falcon with a 302 Clevo.
You had to leave it in 3rd at 60 to keep the revs up.

Yes, it's possible - in the '60s, that's generally a good rule of thumb - three holes horizontally is usually 31-spline, a big open double-D type hole is always 28-spline. Once you get into the mid-70s, nearly all of them were the three-hole style & used the big bearings, but most were tapered down to 28-spline.

Here's another website with lots of 9" info:

  8. $50 is a good price. But it pays to find one with the width and ratio you want. Narrowing a rear end to fit is not particularly expensive. But you can spend close to a grand having a professional shop change the ratios in your pumpkin. With a 2.75/1 ratio you need to watch your tire size closely. Best behind and automatic transmission.

With an auto in it you'd have a bit of 'slop' in the converter, which makes a 2.75 gear feel normal.
    With a manual, you'll find the engine doing ( I'm guessing ) about 1100 rpm in 5th at 60 Mph. I don't think a little 302 would cop it. Maybe a 500 Cad;).
If you are going to run tall tyres, it'll make the situation even worse.

    Personally, I like about a 3.5 to 3.7 ratio:)

I may consider that if I can't find one around here. I am going back out this weekend to look through the pile again. Thanks for the help.
