Well after I built my rear nerf bar last week, I was gonna build a spreader bar for the front frame. But the more I thought about it, I decided to try something different. I wanted to build a simple front nerf in place of a front speader bar to tie the back & front together, and I really like the end result. We built this one from 5/8" solid bar stock(the rear is 3/4"), and I think it compliments the rear nerf pretty well without looking out of place. I will reshape the radius of the frame horns I built to match the nerf's flatter front(more like 32' horns), instead of the round shape they have for the spreader bar I first planned. I will have both nerfs chromed. Here's a few pics:
Always loved nerf bars and on these you nailed a perfect simple look that will set your hot rod apart from the m***es.
That is a really nice-looking truck. Nerf bars in general look great, but I think it is very easy to get them wrong. Yours look perfect on there.
Good work. I wonder how it would look if, looking down, you made a curve or a bend, to match the contour of the grille?
Those nerf bars look sweet dude!! I really like the look of your hot rod!! You have a good eye. Jimmy White
i have enjoyed watching you work on that thing... it looks amazing... you nailed that front nerf bar.. deadon
Nice work and good looks on both ends, I like it! IIRC someone already asked you how you clened off the "pickling" on that hot rolled bar stock in the thread you posted on the rear bar, but I never saw an answer and things move down the pages so fast here that I don't know if you ever answered the question. So, I'll ask it again, how did you clean up the hot rolled bar stock? Dave
Thanks a ton for the support guys, I really appreciate that. It was nice to spend the last few days that I could work on the car doing some fun projects like the nerfs & frame horns. I did kick around alot of different shapes Richard, and mocked up some different things before I built this one. I decided on this route, to keep things clean & simple, and to match the rear nerf a little better. A mild radius in the middle to match the grille would be cool though. I had a couple pm's asking how I built them, here is a link to the rear nerf bar that I did last week, the front was done very similar, just with a smaller radius bend. Plus on the front nerf I was able to do it in 1 piece of bar stock, which only left 1 weld to do on the round part. Rear nerf tech: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=248599 Dave, the bar stock had pretty nasty mill scale. After I heat & bent it, I put it in the sandblast cabinet. That helped a ton. Then I used Norton ricecakes on a grinder, and followed with progressively fine grits of sandpaper(80, 120, 220). And than a scotchbrite pad with Picklex 20, and finished with a wire wheel on the bench grinder. I'll let the chrome shop finish it up, I've had enough Thanks again, I have enjoyed & learned from so many of your builds, I will hopefully end up with a presentable car soon.......... Dan
Well tonight I didn't get any work done, but did some more mock-up. I clamped on the second headlight. Then I tried something for the hell of it. I originally planned on running the steelies plain, with no cap or trim rings. But tonight, I popped on a couple of my brothers cars, and I REALLY like it better! Especially considering that I have a chrome drill front axle, hairpins, rear panhard, & rear 4-bar. With those and the front & rear nerfs chromed, I think the caps will tie it all together. And, though I change my mind daily on final paint color, tonight I could picture it in all black with a white(?)top. At least that was my thought for today Here's some pics, let me know what you think-Thanks! Dan
Thanks man. But only drop it off if you are in no hurry of getting it back I think I am finally getting to a point of building that I can almost get something done the way I want it on maybe the first try, and within a somewhat reasonable time frame. I would never profit as a builder, I am too slow sometimes
